A study of subsidized information received by an Indianapolis television station over a four-week period in 1987 found less than one-fourth of news releases and other subsidies survived the first cut by producers and assignment editors. Information from non-profit organizations and interest groups was kept most frequently, while that from government and business was kept least frequently. It is suggested that two levels of agenda building operate simultaneously in local TV news—the relationship between journalists and local sources, and the less purposive level where non-local sources haphazardly attempt to get on the local agenda.
Thermal models were developed to simulate temperature profiles in Hungry Horse Reservoir and Lake Koocanusa in northwestern Montana. The results of the modeling effort will be useful to the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks in evaluating the effects of alternative seasonal reservoir-drawdown schedules on fish production. The thermal models for Hungry Horse Reservoir and Lake Koocanusa were calibrated using 1984 data and verified using 1985 data. Initial values for unmeasured variables were based on 1965 data. Using data sets for 1984 and 1985, the thermal models simulated temperature profiles that differed from measured temperature profiles by less than about 2 Celsius degrees in the epilimnion and hypolimnion of both reservoirs. Differences between simulated and measured temperatures in the thermocline generally were less than 5 Celsius degrees. Simulated outflow temperatures for both reservoirs followed trends that were similar to measured temperatures. Differences between simulated and measured temperatures in outflow from both reservoirs range from 0 to 5 Celsius degrees. Comparisons of simulated temperature to measured temperature in Hungry Horse Reservoir and Lake Koocanusa indicate that the models were successfully calibrated and verified. Therefore, development and-use of similar models for similar reservoirs of northwestern Montana probably is valid. However, simulation results might be improved by changes in data collection and in the model routines. 8 ro-o o 48°
Data from the 1860 U.S. Products of Industry censuses on Iowa and Wisconsin are analyzed to provide benchmarks against which to compare other data on investment, raw materials and labor costs, and the volume of products for frontier weekly newspapers. They answer questions about what it cost to start a paper, how many people were employed, what raw materials cost, how productive weeklies were as businesses, and how newspapers compared to other businesses.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
