Introduction:The aim of this study was to evaluate, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), transportation and centralization of different nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments.Methods: One hundred and twenty eight mandibular premolars were selected and instrumented using the following brands of NiTi files: WaveOne, WaveOne Gold, Reciproc, ProTaper Next, ProTaper Gold, Mtwo, BioRaCe and RaCe. CBCT imaging was performed before and after root canal preparation to obtain measurements of mesial and distal dentin walls and calculations of root canal transportation and centralization. A normal distribution of data was confirmed by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Levene tests, and results were assessed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Statistical significance was set at 5%. Results:ProTaper Gold produced the lowest canal transportation values, and RaCe, the highest. ProTaper Gold files also showed the highest values for centering ability, whereas BioRaCe showed the lowest. No significant differences were found across the different instruments in terms of canal transportation and centering ability (P > 0.05).Conclusion: Based on the methodology employed, all instruments used for root canal preparation of mandibular premolars performed similarly with regard to canal transportation and centering ability.
Tooth fusion consists of the union of crowns by the enamel and/or dentin. We describe a case of a patient who presented with a fistula in the apical portion of teeth 32 and 33. Clinically, tooth 32 showed increased crown width in relation to other teeth in the same arch. Radiographic examination evidenced fusion of tooth 32 with a possible supernumerary tooth. Cone-beam computed tomography was used to confirm the radiographic findings and revealed incomplete apex formation of the supernumerary tooth. The fused tooth was subjected to root canal treatment. Calcium hydroxide was used as intracanal medication, changed for every 30 days, for 4 months. Subsequently, the mesial canal received an apical plug of mineral trioxide aggregate mixed with distilled water. At 2 years of follow-up, the tooth showed signs of tissue repair.
Pouco se sabe sobre o atendimento público odontológico no Centro-Oeste do Brasil, ainda menos sobre sua produção endodôntica. Esta produção é realizada principalmente nos Centros de Especialidades Odontológicas (CEO), referência pública para tratamento endodôntico, acessível na base de dados DATASUS. Foi objetivo deste estudo explorar a produção endodôntica nas capitais dos estados da Região Centro-Oeste e do Distrito Federal do Brasil. Este estudo retrospectivo transversal analisou a produção endodôntica destes municípios de janeiro de 2011 a dezembro de 2016. Os dados foram obtidos consultando as bases do Ministério da Saúde (DATASUS) e do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE). Os valores foram comparados por análise de variância e os testes de Kolmogorov-Smirnov e Levene seguidos pelo teste post hoc de Tukey. O nível de significância foi definido em p<0,05. Dentre as cidades analisadas, Campo Grande teve a maior produção endodôntica por habitante, seguida de Cuiabá e Goiânia com produções similares, e Brasília. Os dentes com três ou mais canais radiculares apresentaram maior incidência de tratamento endodôntico comparados a dentes com um ou dois canais radiculares. A produção endodôntica dos CEO das capitais dos estados da Região Centro-Oeste e do Distrito Federal do Brasil foi proporcionalmente maior em Campo Grande e menor em Brasília. O tratamento endodôntico foi realizado preferencialmente nos dentes com três ou mais canais radiculares. As instituições de ensino devem estar atentas às mudanças para que seus egressos sejam formados em consonância com o perfil epidemiológico da população bem como com as políticas públicas de saúde.
