The purpose of this research is to describe culinary naming in Dayak Maanyan community. This research uses the theory of onomastics as part of semantics science that learn names. The method used in this research is ethnographic research methods. According to Bramwell (2016) naming used in a society can be investigated by ethnographic research. The data for this research are collected by recording all lexicons related to culinary names and recording the understanding of Dayak Maanyan community about culinary in their society. The results indicate that in terms of word structure, culinary names in the Dayak Maanyan language have single forms, derivative forms, and compound forms. In terms of naming process, the culinary names in the Dayak Maanyan language can be grouped into seven types: naming based on similarity in shape, taste, cooking process, place of origin, borrowing from other languages, main ingredient, and arbitrary by the speakers.
Speaker delivers a speech to achieve the goal indicating the use of persuasive strategies. This research investigates the persuasive strategies used by Donald Trump on his speech about Jerusalem. The aim of this research is to analyze the types of persuasive strategies on Donald Trump’s speech about Jerusalem. Jerusalem is a holy place where many beliefs live together such Islam, Christianity, Jews, etc. Its territory surrounds Palestine and Israel, as both have a great rivalry in an old war. Donald Trump showed his sympathy toward Jerusalem through his speech. In influencing hearers, Trump’s speech reflected persuasive strategies. Persuasive strategies are expressed to influence and change hearers attitude and motives to follow what speaker wants to. This research used qualitative approach. The data analyzed in this research are two speech of Trump about Jerusalem. The result showed that Trump used ethos, logos and pathos. Trump expressed pathos by showing his perceived intelligence, virtuous character and goodwill to create peace in Jerusalem. Logos were expressed while Trump showed factual information about the role of Israel in creating peace in Jerusalem. Trump mostly expressed pathos to affect hearers emotion by creating mildness, giving admiration and confession. Therefore, in achieving the goals of his speech, Trump intended to persuade hearers by touching their emotion.Key words: persuasive strategies, speech, Donald Trump
Riak is a part of the ritual language in Dayak Maanyan ritual tradition, and functioning as a notification about stages of the ritual that are being and will be conducted by the master of the ritual. This study attempted to describe the form of riak through ethnolinguistics study. This study used ethnography research method. The primary data of this study were obtained from riak delivered by wadian in the traditional rituals of the Dayak Maanyan community in Paku Beto village, Paku sub-district, East Barito district, Central Kalimantan province. They were collected through observation and interview during January and April 2019. Findings of the study indicate that each riak mostly consists of four lines, in which the first two lines aim to prepare rhyme and rhythm in order to ease audiences understanding. This first two lines, in the beginning, are an illustration of the culture and the natural or environmental conditions in which the Dayak Maanyan community lives. Meanwhile, the second two lines are the purpose or content of riak that reveal the purpose of the Wadian in the ceremony. Some forms of word use in riak are morphologically different from its usage in the daily DM language. Those differences are the use of affix -i, clitic -ni, and particle sa, in order to give senses of beauty to riak utterances. Regarding the use of words, phrases, and sentences in riak utterances, there are found many descriptions about nature, living environment, habit, and local culture of the Dayak Maanyan community. This use clarifies that the community culture can affect language use.
The purpose of this reserach is to describe structure and meaning of nounphrases in Maanyan language using theory of phrase structure fromBa’dulu. The data for this research are sentences in Maanyan languagecontaining noun phrases. The data were analyzed with agih method andseveral advenced techniques. The results indicate that noun phrases in BMare endocentric phrases with noun as the centre. There are eight structuresof noun phrases in BM, noun as the centre followed by (1) noun or pronounas the attribute, (2) active verb or adjective as the attribute, (3) passive verband noun as the attribute with ‘sa’ as the marker, (4) adjectiva anddemonstrative pronoun as the attribute with sa’ as the marker, (5) two ormore noun as the attribute, (6) preposisional phrase, and noun as the centrepreceded by numeral and ‘hi’ as the attribute. Noun phrase in BM haveseveral meaning, such as, summation, election, equality, explainatory,barrier, determinants, number and appellations.
