The role of insect produced attractants on the aggregation behaviour of the rnediterranean pine engraver beetle Orthotornicus erosusDurin field e eriments, Orthotomicus erosus was caught mostly in traps baited with a combination o!t he beeye roduced compounds 2-meth~l-3-buten-2-01 and ipsdlenol. When offered alon with 2-methyl-3-futen-2-01, an u to 1000-fol increase in concentration of racemic ipsdienol le to a continual increase in catch o?O. erosus and Ips sexdentatus, accompanied by a steady increase of P P-%. It is assumed that 2-methyl-3-buten-2-01 influences landing behaviour of 0. erosus, while ipsdienol acts as a long distance signal. With 0. erosus, ipsdienol could not be replaced by nonspecific pheromonal components (S)-cis-verbenol or racemic frontalin. When offered along with the beetle produced binary mixture, however, especially racemic frontalin had an additive kairomonal effect. i 1 Einleitung Der mediterrane Kiefernborkenkafer Orthotomicus e m u s (Woll.) gewinnt in den kunstlichen Anbaugebieten raschwiichsiger Pinus-Arten zunehmend wirtschaftliche Bedeutung. Can. Ent. 124: 341-346 (1992) The fecundity of first-generation adult Pholetesor ornigis (Weed) increased when individuals were confined with flowers of creeping "Charlie" (Glechoma hederacea L.), dandelion (Tarmacum oficinale Weber). and apple (Malus domesricus L.), but not with blossoms of chickweed [Stellaria media (L.) Cyril101 or Shepherd's purse [Capsella bursa-pastoris &.) Medic]. Longevity of P. ornigis was little affected. The fecundity of second-generation P. ornigis increased when individuds were confined with terminal leaves of apple with honeydew of the aphid Aphispomi DeGeer, but not when confined with terminal leaves without honeydew or with flowers of round-leaved mallow (Malva neglecta Wallr.) or red clover (Trifolium prateare L.). Longevity of P. ornigis adults also increased when they were provided with aphid honeydew. There were significant differences between the total number (oviwsited and ovarian) of engs produced by second-generation females given different f o d sources. Those given a&; d honeydew oviposited a greater proportion of their eggs than those confined with apple leaves without honeydew or with flowers of M. neglects or T, pratense. Adult P. orniRis fed ,an aqueous solution of honey (5050, vfv) lived longest and produced more eggs than those provided with any other food source. Hagley, E.A.C., et D.R. Barber. 1992. Can. Ent. 124: 341-346. Can. Enr. 114: 431-437 (1982) Laboratory studies of the food preferences of several adult carabids showed that Amara aenea DeG., Anisodactylus sanctaecrucis F., Harpalus affinis Schr., and Stenolophus comma F. were polyphagous and readily fed on the seeds of several weeds as well as on young codling moth larvae and apple maggot pupae. H. affinis also attacked 4th and 5th instar codling moth larvae and pupae more readily than the other species. Pterostichus melanarius 111. showed a strong preference for the larger prey such as 5th instar codling moth larvae, earthworms, and scarabaeid larvae. The potential of these species as predators of the codling moth and the apple maggot is discussed. Populations of the spotted tentiform leafminer, Phyllonorycter blancardella (Fabr.), from sprayed orchards across southern Ontario were found highly resistant (about 160-fold at LC50) to azinphosmethyl. Cross resistance to phosmet and partial cross resistance to diazinon were also indicated. All populations were highly susceptible to several synthetic pyrethroid insecticides. Resistant populations were controlled with pyrethroid insecticides applied when eggs were first found or by methomyl applied at about 50% hatch.
Can. Ent. 110: 1127Ent. 110: -1 132 (1978 Acephate (Orthene 75s) was applied to Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii Mirbl. [Franco]) in spring 1976 to determine its efficacy for protecting current year's foliage from western spruce budworm (Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman). Results showed budworm mortality for both treatments exceeded the checks by at least 91% at all sample periods. A significant degree of foliage protection was also achieved as measured by mean twig length and mean number of missing needles per twig. Samples of new growth were analyzed for residues of acephate and methamidophos (an active metabolite of acephate) by gas-liquid chromatography. Results showed that high levels of insecticide persisted for about 10 days, then dropped over a 5-day period to lower levels for the rest of the study, about 35 days.
