Schools are institutions primarily designed to provide a space for teaching and learning. However, in practice they have multiple functions. Various social and cultural activities of the location regularly take place in schools (Oetting & Donnenmeyer, 1998; Simons, 2011; Valli, Stefanski, & Jacobson, 2014). Schools are also places of socialization for both children and families (Neal & Neal, 2012), and sometimes allow contact between groups of different social backgrounds (Nast & Bokland 2013).
