It is 20 years ago that Robert Emerson and C. M.Lewis (5) average energy on the cultivated surface during the growth period (27). Considering only wave lengths available for photosynthesis, the efficiencies were between 0.5 and 2 %, and the large deviation from photosynthetic efficiency in laboratory experiments of short duration-viz., 20 to 30 %-was the starting point of our work. Earlier computations of efficiency of higher plant growth are discussed in detail in (11). The possible reasons for the relatively low long term efficiency are as follows (27): 1)
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
