Jalin Herbal Mannex Liquid (JHML) is a polyherbal formulation from honey, Panax ginseng, Liriosma ovate, and Lepidium mehenil, intended for enhanced sexual performance and improve sperm count in men. JHML was studied via its effect on body weight, biochemical indices and histopathology of the testes. Twenty healthy Wistar rats of 120 -150 g weight were allotted into groups A and B., of ten rats each, group A (control), were given 2 mL/kg B.W of tap water, group B were dosed with 2 mL/kg B.W of JHML for four weeks with the animals allowed access to feed and water ad-libitum. Blood were obtained through heart perforation, kidney and testes were excised, washed with normal buffered saline. Results from the investigation indicated that JHML had androgenic properties with marked significant increase (p˂0.05) in body weight of rats administered with JHML. Significant increase (p˂0.05) was observed in LH, FSH, testosterone and with a concomitant significant decrease (p˂0.05) in PRL. The JHML caused non-significant decrease (p>0.05) on triglycerides and cholesterol but with positive significant effect (p˂0.05) on LDL and HDL. No significant changes (p>0.05) on creatinine, urea, uric acid and serum electrolytes. Testicular sections of rats treated with JHML exhibited normal features, seminiferous epithelium and interstitial tissues with active spermatogenesis. The significant increase (p˂0.05) in testosterone, LH, FSH with a concomitant significant decrease (p˂0.05) in PRL may account for its sex invigorating potential, the non-significant changes observed in some biochemical indices of the rats showed that JHML is relatively safe at the studied dose.
Coconut juice is a natural drink from coconut fruit. This study was aimed at evaluating its positive potential on biochemical indices. Fresh coconut fruits were de-dshelled and washed. The cotyledon was broken to extract the water which was used in blending the fruits. The extract was filtered and the filtrate was collected in a vial. Twenty healthy male Wistar rats weighing 160 -180 g, were grouped into two groups of ten rats each and were treated as follows for four weeks. Group A: control rats received oral dose of 2 mL/kg body weight of distilled water once daily for 28 days, and group B: received oral dose of 2 mL/kg body weight of coconut juice extract once daily for 28 days, both groups were, however, allowed free access to feed and water ad-libitum. The animals were weighed before and on completion of the experimental protocol. Blood was also collected via cardiac puncture and used for renal function and lipid profile assay, kidneys were excised and weighed, homogenized and the supernatant was used for antioxidant enzyme evaluation. Findings showed that there was no significant change (p>0.05) in the kidney-to-body weight ratio and renal function indices. Significant reduction (p<0.05) was seen in cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL but with an increase (p<0.05) in HDL. Antioxidant enzymes were significantly increased (p<0.05). The study concludes that coconut juice extract has positive stimulatory potentials on antioxidants, renal functions and lipid parameters of wistar rats.
Background: Cyclophosphamide (CP) is an anticancer and immunosuppressive agent commonly used in men of reproductive age. Annona muricata(soursop) is a tropical plant with a widely acclaimed history of various therapeutic properties. Objective: This study was aimed at determining the effect of the ethanolic leaf extract of Annona muricata on the reproductive system of male rats treated with cyclophosphamide. Materials and Methods: Twelve (n-12) male wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups of four rats each. Group 1 served as control and received only feed and water. Group 2 was administered a single dose of CP (100 mg/kg body weight) intraperitoneally on the 15th day, while group 3 was administered 100 mg/kg body weight of ethanolic extract of Annona muricata for 14 days and a single intraperitonealdose of CP on the 15th day. At the end of the experiment, the animals were sacrificed under anaesthesia, blood and tissue samples were collected for biochemical and histological evaluations respectively. Result: The result showed that serum concentrations of LH and FSH were significantly increased (p<0.05) in group 2 (5.53±1.28 and 10.95±1.44) when compared to the control group (1.38±1.02 and 4.97±1.53) and decreasedin group 3(1.14±0.93 and 4.97±1.45) when compared to the control group (1.38±1.02 and 4.97±1.53). Serum testosterone level decreased significantly in group 2 (1.31±1.08) when compared to the control group (5.08±1.02) andincreasedin group 3 (4.95±1.23) when compared to the control group (5.08±1.02). Testicular SOD and MDA was significantly decreased in group 2 (3.23±0.41 and 1187.71±1.21) when compared to the control group (6.00±1.65 and 371.91±1.47) and slightly elevated in group3 (6.05±0.97 and 371.97±1.47). The histology of the testicular tissue shows markedly shrunken seminiferous tubules with severe germ cell aplasia and basement membrane thickening following cyclophosphamide administration which was restored to normal after treatment with aqueous extract of Annona muricata. Conclusion: The study reveals that Annona muricata possess protective effect against cyclophosphamide-induced reproductive toxicity in male wistar rats.
Aluminium is one of the highly abundant element in the environment and the and the third most common metal in the earth crust. Piper guinense is herbal medicine used for the treatment of many diseases like infertility. This study shows the antioxidant effect of Piper guineense on infertility caused by aluminium chloride in male wistar rats. Male wistar albino rats weighing between 150-200g was randomly separated into five different groups. The first group served as negative control and received distilled water and standard feed. Group two served as positive control and received AlCl 3 (4.3mg/kg bw) and Group three received AlCl 3 (4.3mg/kg bw) and Piper guineense (100mg/kg bw) for 21 days. There was a significant (P<0.05) decrease in the activities of SOD, CAT, GPX, GST, GSH and there was a significant (P<0.05) increase in LPO from, in rats treated with AlCl 3 (4.3mg/kg bw) compared to the negative control. Also there was a significant (P<0.05) increase in the activities of SOD , CAT, GPX, GST and GSH in rat testis treated with Piper guineense (100mg/kg bw) plus AlCl 3 (4.3mg/kg bw) compared to the positive control while there was a significant (P<0.05) decrease in LPO from12.75 ± 0.521to 9.02 ± 0.439 in rat's testis treated with Piper guineense (100mg/kg bw) plus AlCl 3 (4.3mg/kg bw) compared to the positive control. There was a significant (P<0.05) increase in activities of ALT and AST, in rat serum treated with AlCl 3 (4.3mg/kg bw) compared to the negative control and there was a
