This paper deals with the benefits of simple switched beam base station architectures for enhanced capacity in cellular systems. An example of such an architecture is presented and its characteristics discussed. Then, a simulation model is constructed which is used to characterise the performance in interference limited environments in both the downlink and the uplink. Finally, the possible non-availability of the desired beam and its impact on capacity is considered. It is concluded that architectures such as the one described here may be able to deliver the gains from an unconstrained adaptive antenna system, whilst exhibiting lower complexity.
