In a cohort of bereaved next of kin of patients who died in the intensive care unit, we identified a high prevalence of psychiatric illness, particularly major depressive disorder. More work is needed to identify those at risk for psychiatric illness so that appropriate interventions may be targeted.
department (ED). Most research focuses on academic facilities more likely to have access to palliative care (PC). Research is needed on the practicality of end-of-life (EOL) care inall types of EDs: academic, urban, and rural. There appears to be a lack of appropriate resources and training in EOL care for emergency physicians (EP).Research Objectives. We sought to explore EPs' perceived need for palliative focused EOL care in the ED and understand EPs' current practice and constraints.
Methods.A validated internet survey, designed by the investigators, of EPs throughout Indiana in May 2013. EP's from multiple demographics were surveyed regarding perception of need for PC in EDs, their practice of EOL skills, resources they find useful, barriers faced, and desire for further education.
