Purpose – Souvenir research in tourism research has steadily increased, but to date no metric analysis has been published that assesses the main issues addressed to guide and support new research. Design – This study fills this gap through an updated bibliometric review of 282 articles identified in the SCOPUS/WOS databases and an analysis of the future research agenda. Methodology – The PRISMA method and VoSViewer software for a systematic review was applied. Approach – This process allowed research areas identification identify research and it determined the relationships between them, drawing the paths that this scientific subject has taken. Findings – Results reveal a cross-citation-based cluster formation suggesting six main research themes: authenticity; shopping; symbolic value; satisfaction with shopping/ purchase; destination image; tourist experience. Additionally, a ‘future research agenda’ is proposed, organized into five general research pillars on the topic: Food consumption trends, Impacts, Souvenir consumption and value in context, Destination experience, and Technology impact. Originality of the research – Findings are expected to help researchers in the field to build their contributions on existing relevant academic advances, thereby better integrating their efforts into a theory of souvenir research that is still forming and consolidating, including through the Providing promising topics and avenues for future research.
Responsible tourism is an increasingly important subject in tourism research, political discourse, and business practice. This paper reviews both the concept of responsible tourism, as well as the use of the concept of responsibility in the scientific literature of tourism from 1988 to 2018. We reflect on the social role of responsible tourism in relation to the term as concept, the practices of companies, and the communities and public administrations affected by it. The results are an exhaustive, complete and updated picture of the meanings of responsible tourism for academics; the paper also represents a debate focused on the moralisation of tourism and the critical meaning of responsible tourism as a concept, social practice of consumption, behaviour, social movement and agency for sustainable tourism change. Finally, a unified theory for responsible tourism is proposed, based on accountability, sustainability and behaviour, for a new definition of ethical tourism practice.
Tourism planning and development necessarily entails efficient governance. The structure of such governance system includes the key players in order to ensure that all stakeholders are heard, contribute to the plan and participate in its implementation. This article introduces Cape Verde, a country with significant tourism growth and results, and it focuses on the case study of Boa Vista island. This paper is the result of a 5-year research that applied a mix methodology based on field work and interviews content analysis framed statistically and comprehensively in a mixed method analysis. This study demonstrates that communities are able to identify the negative and positive impacts of tourism development. Boa Vista has a community that is a practical example that locals able to recognize the existing problems and contribute to the future path to sustainable and truly representative development in sub-Saharan Africa.
