Cytological observations on 3 species of Prophyra from the Atlantic have shown the chromosome number to be:P. miniata n=3 2n= 6 P. umbilicalis n=4 2n= 8 P. purpurea n=5 2n=10

The complete life history of the distromatic species Porphyra miniata has been obtained in culture. Conchospores were released from the conchosporangia only at low temperature (~5 °C). These spores formed the leafy thallus of about 1 m in length. After about 4 months the leafy thalli developed α- and β-spores; the former were viable and initiated the life history again. Neutral spores were not observed in specimens either from nature or from culture.
