Introduction. The economic development of a country is largely determined by the state of its constituent territories. Priority in this regard is given to rural settlements that have serious economic, natural, demographic, ecological and spiritual and moral potential, ensuring their sustainable development, decent standard and quality of life of the rural population. The aim of the article is the research of actual problems of rural territories and substantiation of prospects of their socio-economic development. Methodology. For the review, articles by domestic and foreign scientists on the problems of rural development and statistical data were used. Results. Based on the study of the work of experts, the main problems of modern rural areas have been identified. The article presents measures for further development of the object of research. It is revealed that it is impossible without the support of the state, whose participation should be aimed at the development of agro-industrial production and the solution of social problems of villagers. Conclusions. The conducted research allows us to determine the causes of the problems of the village, the main directions of their solution. The results can serve as a basis for specifying activities in relation to individual regions of the country.
