In the study linguistic-and-ecological approach is used for describing the reference book of regional toponyms The Names of Settlements in the Volgograd Region as a lexicographic issue. Dictionary entry zones are described and the most complex issues of their compilation are indicated. The authors have characterized the entry zone The Degree of Name Uniqueness within the Region, represented in the onomastic dictionaries for the first time. The four successive stages in oikonym uniqueness gradation have been identified, that enables making adjustments to the directories and reference books while nominating settlements. The zone of the dictionary entry Syntactic Characteristic of the Head Unit in Combination with the Appellative, the introduction of which is stipulated by the variability of such combinations in speech practice, contains information about case parallelism between the oikonym and the appellative, or its absence. The zone of the dictionary entry Ottoponymic Derivatives of the Vocabulary Unit reveals the possibility of forming relative adjectives and nouns naming the inhabitants of a particular locality. Dictionary entries in the reference book are drawn up taking into account the linguistic-and-ecological criteria developed by the authors for the toponymic names.
The article analyzes the year-name space of the city of Volgograd (godonyms), interpreted as a set of names of linear geographic objects officially recorded on the territory of a settlement. The linguistic codes most in demand in the regional toponymic policy have been identified and characterized, the most important features of these codes are consistency, structure, repletion with relevant to users information, and in some cases conventionality, symbolism consigning positive semantics. It is argued that the extremely frequent codes for nominating the intracity linear topo objects of Volgograd are memorial, local, anthropogenic and conditionally symbolic ones. It has been established that memoratives can be subdivided into personal, group, and associated with some significant events. Personal memoratives are distributed over the three strata: godonyms commemorating world-famous people, godonyms naming places after iconic personalities in the national community, godonyms based on the names of people recognized in the region. Godonyms, designed to preserve the memory of military exploits committed during the defense of the city in different historical epochs, prevail among group and event memoratives. The most urgent tasks in the field of municipal toponymic policy are outlined as being associated with increase in degrees of name uniqueness within the city, reduction of onyms that contain numerals and abbreviations, and raising requirement to linguistic consistency and accurate spelling of godonyms.
The paper addresses the issue of religion in the U.S. presidential elections of 2000-2012. On the one hand, the author uses a fragmentary approach to studying the religious factor in the U.S. presidential elections, within the framework of which religion is operationalized in terms of religious affiliation. On the other hand, the author uses a systemic approach to studying the religious factor in the U.S. presidential elections, within the framework of which religion is operationalized in terms of religious commitment. The author compares and contrasts the two approaches and concludes that it is impossible to say what has mattered most in the past four U.S. presidential elections -religious affiliation or religious commitment, since each of these parameters measures religion differently and each of the models developed on the basis of these measurements reveal distinct findings and contribute differently to the understanding of the role of religion in the U.S. presidential elections.
