One of the obstacles for ex situ conservation of wild and exotic animals are the diseases that affect them in captivity and, among them, the endoparasitoses, which are very frequent. The objective of this study is to report the occurrence of endoparasites in the fecal samples of animals from the Arruda Câmara Zoobotanical Park, at João Pessoa, Paraiba State, Brazil, as well as to identify significant statistical differences between the percentages of each parasite species found. To this end, 66 fecal samples were obtained from 50 species of animals including mammals, birds, and reptiles. Statistical differences between the percentages of each parasite species were obtained using the binomial test at 5% significance level. A total of 54.5% (36/66) of the fecal samples were positive (p=0.539), among which 80.5% (29/36) presented nematodes, followed by cestodes 19.4% (07/36), protozoans 13.9% (05/36), and mites 16.7% (06/36). This study reports for the first time the association of Balantidium sp. with Tapirus terrestris, Bertiella sp. with Alouatta caraya, Hymenolepis spp., and Aspiculuris spp. as spurious parasites in reptiles; and Entamoeba coli and Eimeria spp. with Iguana iguana in the northeastern part of the country. This study provides knowledge about some of the endoparasites that may occur in zoos in the northeastern region of the country, as well as in expanding the ecological data on wild and exotic animals.
Carnauba (Copernicia prunifera) is a forest species with multiple uses, and is of great economic and social importance for several communities involved in extractive agriculture in northeastern Brazil. However, there are few studies on genetic variability in this species. Thus, this work aimed to produce information about the genetic characterization of C. prunifera seeds and seedlings, using provenance and progeny evaluations. A progeny test was performed in a plant nursery, using seeds of 36 matrices sampled in the municipalities of Mossoró and Apodi (Rio Grande do Norte State), and Russas and Icapuí (Ceará State). Three groups were derived according to the spatial distance between the collected matrices. Biometric analyses of the seeds were performed, adopting a completely randomized experimental design, with four replicates of 25 seeds in each analysis. A randomized block design (five replicates and five plants per plot) was used at the seedling production phase. The data evaluated included the emergence speed index, emergence percentage, leaf size, leaf base diameter, and survival (at 30, 60, and 90 days after sowing). The restricted maximum likelihood method was used in the statistical analysis, with the aid of SELEGEN software. In order to evaluate genetic variability in the C. prunifera population samples, it was verified that the juvenile characters presented a moderate genetic control. The three groups of spatially delimited matrices presented no significant genetic differences. This information may assist in the development of forestry practice for this species.
The planning of methodologies, which envision the areas of professional activity and provide a contact with the practical reality, presents itself as an effective instrument for the permanence of the undergraduate in the course, especially in the initial periods, in HEIs. In view of this scenario, we sought to assess the challenges, questions, and impasses of an experimental proposal for the curricularization of university extension in the Zootechnics graduation as part of the anatomy discipline, even in the first year, in order to meet the demands and needs students and the community, in order to reduce the dropout rate of students. This research reports on the experience in 2010, in which there was a decrease in dropout and failure rates in the discipline of anatomy of domestic animals. Thus, the significant results of its applicability are perceived, which, in addition to reversing negative statistics of failure and dropout, provided circumstances that favored and facilitated the progress of the students who were taking the semester discipline in effect, due to the early contact with the reality of their professional qualification.
