Objective: To determine the prevalence of syphilis in pregnancy and to assess the effect of syphilis on maternal and perinatal outcomes.
Methods:In a retrospective study, data were reviewed for pregnant women who Results: Among 51 164 pregnant women who underwent VDRL testing during the study period, 343 women were VDRL-positive (seropositivity rate 0.7%) and 18 were both VDRL-and TPHA-positive and were considered to have syphilis (seropositivity rate <0.1%). Among these 18 women, there were two stillbirths, four preterm births, and five small-for-gestational-age neonates.
Conclusion:Although the prevalence of syphilis was low in the study population, women who were affected had adverse perinatal outcomes. Routine screening of all pregnant women for syphilis as early as possible in pregnancy, with appropriate treatment and follow-up of affected women and newborns, should be done to reduce adverse pregnancy outcomes.

The diagnosis of Mullerian duct anomaly is crucial because of strong association with infertility, endometriosis and miscarriage. Robert’s uterus is a rare variant of septate uterus. Patients present with recurrent abdominal pain and severe dysmenorrhoea. Magnetic resonance imaging is the investigation of choice. In this case series, we present the imaging features of four such cases.
Objective
To study the changes in the rates of perinatal mortality, birth asphyxia, and caesarean sections in relation to interventions implemented over the past 18 years, in a tertiary centre in South India.
Design
Retrospective study.
Setting
Labour and maternity unit of a tertiary centre in South India.
Population or sample
Women who gave birth between 2000 and 2018.
Methods
Information from perinatal audits, chart reviews, and data retrieved from the electronic database were used. Interventions implemented during this time period were audits and training, obstetric re‐organisation, and minor changes in staffing and infrastructure.
Main outcome measures
Main outcome measures were perinatal mortality rate, birth asphyxia rate, and caesarean section rate.
Results
Perinatal mortality rate decreased from 44 per 1000 births in 2000 to 16.4 per 1000 births in 2018 (P < 0.001). The rates of babies born with birth asphyxia requiring admission to the neonatal unit decreased from 24 per 1000 births in 2001 to 0.7 per 1000 births in 2018 (P < 0.00001). The overall caesarean section rate was maintained close to 30%.
Conclusion
In a large tertiary hospital in South India, with 14 000 deliveries per year, a policy of rigorous audits of stillbirths and birth asphyxia, electronic fetal monitoring, and the introduction of standardised criteria for trial of scar, reduced the perinatal mortality and the rate of babies born with birth asphyxia over the past 18 years, without an increase in the caesarean section rate.
Tweetable abstract
Rigorous perinatal audits with training in fetal cardiotocography, decreased birth asphyxia, without a major increase in caesarean rates.
Background: Primary objective of this work was to study the prevalence of voiding and defecatory dysfunction in women with pelvic organ prolapse and correlate the stage and compartment of prolapse with voiding and defecatory dysfunction. The secondary objective was to correlate stage of prolapse with flow rate and post void residue and to study the voiding dysfunction in pelvic organ prolapse. Methods: A prospective observational cohort study in 120 post-menopausal women scheduled for vaginal hysterectomy pelvic floor repair. Short form of pelvic floor distress inventory (PFDI-20) and International prostate symptom questionnaire I-PSS score for Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS)was employed. Results: The prevalence of voiding dysfunction in this study was 78% and defecatory dysfunction was 77%. Higher stage of prolapse had significant correlation with voiding dysfunction. (P value was 0.028). Women with posterior compartment defect had more voiding dysfunction with the significant P value (p value was 0.04). Pre-operative voiding dysfunction resolved post operatively in 86%, the p<0.000 which was highly significant. Conclusions: Women with pelvic organ prolapse had high prevalence of voiding and defecatory dysfunction. Stages of prolapse have positive correlation with voiding dysfunction. Pre-operative voiding dysfunction resolved after vaginal hysterectomy and pelvic floor repair.
