On p. 6. This theorem [I. 4], which is made the fourth proposition in Euclid, should rightly be the first, inasmuch as it is the foundation of Geometry, the cornerstone upon which the whole superstructure of geometrical science rests. Yet viewing it without fear or prejudice, we see how nearly connected with our simplest thoughts and habits, Geometry, the most abstract and refined of all human inventions, really is.
