Background: The purpose of this study was to analyze the anti-adherent activity of nano-coatings deposited by Thermionic Vacuum Arc plasma on C. albicans ATCC 10231 biofilm. Materials and methods: A total of 80 disc-shaped (2 × 10 mm) polymethymethacrylate samples were prepared and divided into four groups with 10 samples in each group (Control, ZnO, SnO2, Ag) ( n = 10). Using thermionic vacuum arc plasma, they were coated with ZnO, SnO2, and Ag. 3-(4,5-dimethyl-thiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and Crystal Viole (CV) assays were conducted for biofilm quantification. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe biofilm images of C. albicans biofilm. Results: MTT and CV mean values differ statistically significantly between all groups ( p ⩽ 0.05). The SnO2 group had the lowest mean value, whereas the control group received the highest value. Conclusion: SnO2 coating shown greater anti-adherent activity than either metal oxides. C. albicans biofilm formation on denture base surfaces is reduced following Thermionic Vacuum Arc plasma coating with SnO2.
The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of helium plasma treatment on tensile bond strength between polymethylmethacrylate and soft liner material. For the tensile test, acrylic samples (30 x 10 x 10 mm³; n=100) were prepared. Acrylic samples were divided into five surface groups (n = 10/group) and treated by different concentrations of helium plasma: G I: Control group (untreated), G II: 100% Helium plasma-treated group, G III: 90% Helium plasma-treated group, G IV: 85% Helium plasma-treated group, G V: 80% Helium plasma-treated group. After plasma treatment, the soft liner was processed between two acrylic resin blocks according to the manufacturer's instructions and polymerized. The surface properties were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. All samples were submitted to a tensile test using a universal testing machine. After failure, the surface properties were evaluated by stereomicroscope. One-way analysis of variance was used to compare the groups. p <0.05 value was considered statistically significant. While the highest mean tensile bond strength value was obtained with the G III (1.56 ± 0.13 MPa), the lowest value was observed with the G I (0.95 ± 0.2 MPa). In addition, it was observed that the surface roughness increased the most in G III.
The aim of this review is to evaluate the timing of dental implants placement and long-term survival rates in patients who have had prosthetic rehabilitation with dental implants after ablative surgery and radiotherapy (RT), and have had head and neck cancer (HNC). For this purpose; implant survival (IS) rates placed as primary/secondary or placed in bones with/without RT were evaluated. The literature published between 2000-2020 has been reviewed for the evaluation of dental implant treatment in patients with HNC. The search terms used in PubMed scans were "head and neck cancer", "oral cancer", "dental implant" and "radiotherapy". 134 related articles have been defined in PubMed database searches and 16 were included in the final analysis. Dental implant applications have gained importance in the prosthetic treatment of patients with oral cancer. In cases where conventional prosthetic treatments are insufficient, dental implants provide retention and stability to dentures. However, before starting treatment, whether the patient is receiving chemotherapy, RT and the use of bisphosphonate should be taken into consideration and the timing of the surgical procedures should be adjusted correctly. In addition, these patients should be followed up regularly for a long time.
