The morphological and endocrine aspects of the ovarian interstitial tissue of adult female viscachas were investigated to establish the probable function and the biological significance of this compartment in this rodent. Pregnant and nonpregnant adult female viscachas were used. The histological characteristics, histochemical properties, and ultrastructural features of the interstitial tissue were studied. A morphometric study was carried out to measure the relative area of lipid droplets. The progesterone and androstenedione levels in ovarian tissue as well as in serum were determined by radioimmunoassay. In this species, the histological observations showed an abundant interstitial tissue that contained a large amount of lipids. The cholesterol and its esters were present in nonpregnant females and were scarce in pregnant animals. The most ultrastructural differences were observed at mid-pregnancy. At this stage, the interstitial cells showed features that suggested higher steroidogenic activity. Furthermore, during mid-pregnancy, the relative area of lipid droplets was smaller. Both progesterone and androstenedione levels in ovarian tissue and serum were higher during pregnancy. Our results suggest that the interstitial tissue may be storage of precursor substances for the steroidogenesis via. These precursors are probably used when the endocrine requirements are high, that is, during the pregnancy. Thus, this compartment may contribute to the normal gestation of Lagostomus. Se indagó la validez y confiabilidad de una versión argentina de la Escala de Resiliencia (ER) de Wagnild y Young (1993) realizándose la traducción y adaptación al español hablado en Argentina. La ER consta de 25 ítems: 17 evalúan “Competencia Personal” y 8, “Aceptación de Sí Mismo y de la Vida”. La muestra estuvo compuesta por 222 argentinos (152 mujeres y 70 hombres). El rango de edad fue de 18 a 70 años (M=30,93; DE=12,12). En el análisis factorial fueron extraídos tres factores (capacidad de autoeficacia, capacidad de propósito y sentido de vida, y evitación cognitiva) que explican el 32,63% de la varianza; identificándose 4 ítems complejos. La consistencia interna según el Alfa de Cronbach de la ER total fue de 0,72. No hubo diferencia significativa entre el puntaje medio de varones y mujeres. Se concluye que la ER es un instrumento confiable para su aplicación en la población argentina.Palabras clave: Resiliencia, Escala de Resiliencia, Confiabilidad, Validez.
The morphology of the rat lung was studied by light microscopy in different situations: after surgical and pharmacological castration and after administration of testosterone to the castrated rat to determine if the androgen is required to maintain the normal morphology of the lung. We also determined the effect of flutamide on the phospholipid composition of both the surfactant and microsomes of the lung. Rats were separated into five groups: I -control non-castrated rats, IIcastrated rats sacrificed 21 days after castration, III -castrated rats that received testosterone daily from day 2 to day 21 after castration, IVcastrated rats that received testosterone from day 15 to day 21 after castration, and V -control rats injected with flutamide for 7 days. The amount of different phospholipids in the surfactant and microsomes of the lung was measured in group I and V rats. At the light microscopy level, the surgical and pharmacological castration provoked alterations in the morphology of the lung, similar to that observed in human lung emphysema. The compositions of surfactant and microsomes of the lung were similar to those previously reported by us for the surgically castrated rats. These results indicate that androgens are necessary for the normal morphology as well as for some metabolic aspects of the lung.
Few studies are available about the role of dietary zinc (Zn) in respiratory diseases. Adult male rats were divided into 2 groups and fed respectively a moderate Zn-deficient diet and a Zn-adequate control diet. In lung tissue at 2 months, thiobarbituric acid-reactive species (TBARS), total glutathione, glutathione disulfide, protein carbonyls, metallothionein, and the activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase, CuZn-superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH) were increased, but protein thiols decreased. In lung tissue at 4 months, TBARS, metallothionein, and the activities of CuZnSOD, Mn-superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) increased. The activities GPx, catalase, G-6-PDH were lower than control group. The changes were accompanied by histological alterations in Zn-deficient lung. The results provide evidence of the pro-oxidative effects of Zn-deficiency in lung, and suggest that the time of treatment play a key role in determining lung susceptibility to oxidative stress.
This study examined the psychometric properties of an Argentine Version of the Morningness Composite (CS) and the Early/Late Preference (PS) Scales. During summer (long photoperiod in Argentina), 304 subjects (69.1% women; mean age=33.64 yrs, SD=14 yrs) completed the scales for the first time. In winter (short photoperiod), 100 of the same individuals (71% women; mean age=37.17 yrs, SD=14.63 yrs) were retested. The total scores ranged within the values reported by previous studies and were independent of gender. Older subjects showed higher morningness scores. The internal consistencies were good (CS=0.86, PS=0.82). Item 7 from the CS and items 7 and 9 from the PS showed low item-scale correlation. Factor analysis produced a three-factor solution for both scales. However, the inconsistency of the evening items suggests that the single-solution may be more acceptable. Test-retest correlations were satisfactory (CS=0.88, PS=0.78), but the two-related-sample test revealed significant differences between test and retest scores, suggesting relative temporal stabilities. Both scales presented similar and acceptable psychometric properties and good correlation, indicating construct validity.
