In acromegalic patients, somatostatin analogues treatment reduces insulin resistance, and also impairs insulin secretion. This may suggest that the use of oral secretagogue hypoglycaemic agents and/or insulin therapy should be considered rather than insulin sensitizers, as the treatment of choice in acromegalic patients who develop frank hyperglycaemia during somatostatin analogues therapy.
In this paper, we have studied the factors that influence the environmental disclosures of Italian\ud listed companies. We also aimed to verify the effects produced by the introduction of specific\ud legislation (albeit of a voluntary nature) on environmental disclosures. The analysis has the\ud advantage of including all of the informational documents produced by the company. The analysis\ud shows an (excessively) low level of disclosure of environmental information by the companies\ud examined. The econometric analysis then shows, contrary to our hypothesis and the\ud results of previous analyses carried out in other countries, a negative and statistically significant\ud relationship between environmental disclosures, the presences of minority shareholders and\ud large auditors and the listing of the company, including in foreign markets. We lastly observed\ud that the introduction of ad hoc legislation as purely voluntary only affects the contents of quantitative\ud environmental disclosures, which are unsuitable for a highly industrialized developed\ud country
The membrane receptor FAT/CD36 facilitates the major fraction of long-chain fatty acid (FA) uptake by muscle and adipose tissues. In line with the well-known effects of FA metabolism on carbohydrate utilization and insulin responsiveness, altered expression of CD36 has been linked to phenotypic features of the metabolic syndrome including insulin resistance and dyslipidemia. FA metabolism is also known to significantly affect insulin secretion. However, the role of CD36 in this process remains unknown, since its expression levels and function in the pancreas have not been explored. In the present study, freshly isolated human islets and a mouse-derived beta-cell line (MIN6) were shown positive for CD36 expression by RT-PCR, Western blot, and immunofluorescence. The identity of the PCR product was confirmed by microsequencing. The identified transcript was translated and the protein was expressed and subjected to the known posttranslational glycosylation. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer analysis and subcellular protein fractionation indicated that insulin and CD36 are colocalized in the secretory granules of beta-cells. Islet CD36 functioned in FA uptake because this process was blocked by the irreversible CD36 inhibitor sulfosuccinimidyl-oleate. More importantly, sulfosuccinimidyl-oleate reversed enhancing and inhibiting effects, respectively, of acute and long-term palmitate incubations on glucose-dependent insulin secretion. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that human islets express CD36 in the plasma membrane as well as in the insulin secretory granules. CD36 activity appears important for uptake of FA into beta-cells as well as for mediating their modulatory effects on insulin secretion.
Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate how an environmental management system (EMS) might affect the environmental product innovation propensity of a firm through its influence on two factors shaping the knowledge process: the human capital management practices of training and development and the organisational context. Design/methodology/approach To test the study’s hypotheses, an empirical analysis was carried out on 262 companies drawn from 16 developed European markets included in the S&P Europe 350 Dow Jones index over the years 2005-2015.The authors adopted regression analysis by using the ordinary least squares and the binary logit econometric models. Findings Consistently with the study’s predictions, results show that for organisational contexts characterised by the presence of family owners, the EMAS-certified EMS reveals as a significant moderating factor that positively influences their approach to the knowledge management tools for the improvement of the workforce cognitive capabilities, with a significant impact on the firm’s openness towards green product innovation. On the contrary, the ISO 14001-certified EMS tends not to stimulate such proactive behaviour, in both family and non-family firms. Practical implications The findings suggest that an EMS can stimulate the knowledge exploration in the environmental protection field. To this end, top managers should overcome the bureaucratic vision of an EMS and conceive it as a knowledge management tool able to support the learning evolution of the organisation through an effective commitment to human capital management policies of training and development. Originality/value Drawing from social identity and institutional theories, this is the first study – to the best of the authors’ knowledge – that theorises and tests why the adoption of an EMS might stimulate the knowledge advancement of the organisation in a different way, especially in peculiar organisational contexts of family firms where the identity overlap between the family and the firm tends to affect the knowledge management process.
