Language is a tool of communication used by people anywhere and every time. Now days people commonly find a figurative language in daily life, for example in a lyric of song. Figurative language is a way to express an idea in implicit way. This research is trying to analyze the figurative languages which exist in the lyric of song “A Whole New World” and trying to find out its meaning by analyzing its contextual meaning. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The data instrument is the song lyric which taken from Genius website. The result showed that this song consist of some figurative languages, such as alliteration, simile, personification, metaphor, and hyperbole. Furthermore, the most figurative language used in the lyric is metaphor. It is highly relatable with the imaginative theme of the song itself. The contextual meaning of each figurative language is also explained based on the situation of the lyric.
English is an international language learned in Indonesia. One of the difficulties of student learning is when learning to read. They tend to read without knowing the meaning of the text they are reading. On this occasion the researcher tried to teach comprehension reading using cooperative learning through jeopardy games to increase students’ interest and ability in learning reading comprehension. In addition, researchers also want to find out what difficulties students face when learning to use jeopardy game through this jeopardy game. This research was conducted on students of class VIII E Semester 1 SMPN 1 Cililin which consists of 36 students. This research was conducted using the Classroom Action Research (CAR). From the results of the pretest and posttest, there were 20 pretest results from 36 students or 56% who succeeded in reaching the minimal completeness criteria. Whereas in the posttest there was an increase to 28 out of 36 students or 78,85% who successfully reached the minimal completeness criteria. Then it can be concluded the use of games in learning increases the ability of students in reading comprehension. However, there are some students who still find it difficult to learn to use this method because their vocabulary mastery is still lacking. Vocabulary is important in English language. Because, to make a sentence an adequate vocabulary is needed. So, the researcher apply a method in the classroom which can make students motivated to learn vocabulary. The aim of the research is to know that the crossword puzzle is effective to improve students’ vocabulary or not through the use of crossword puzzles among seventh-grade students of MTs At-Taqwa Cihampelas in the academic year of 2018/2019. The method used in this research is quantitative technique and the pre-experimental research design conducted in one class. The population in this research is seventh-grade students of MTs At-Taqwa Cihampelas with the total number of the population are 104 students consisting of 3 classes, and the sample is class VII.A that consist of 30 students. The data is collected with the pretest and posttest as an instrument. The researcher conducted the tests before (pre-test) and after (post-test). After that the researcher give students a treatment consists of five meetings. The result show that the mean score of pre-test was 41.83, and the post-test was 75.67 after gives treatment uses crossword puzzle. It means that teaching English vocabulary using a crossword puzzle was effective media to improve students’ vocabulary at seventh-grade. Keywords: crossword puzzle, students’ vocabulary mastery.
This research is based on the use of the Memrise application in a vocabulary study of seventh-grade students. This research was carried out based on a preliminary study which showed that students had difficulty learning English because of the lack of understanding of the vocabulary they had, and the method used by the teacher to teach vocabulary is still in a conventional way. The subjects of this study were 35 students consisting of 28 male and 10 female seventh-grade students of SMPN 1 Cililin. The purpose of this study is to improve students' understanding and achievement of vocabulary through the use of the Memrise application. Vocabulary tests and questionnaires were used as the instruments of eliciting the data. The results of the test and questionnaire study showed an increase in grades, and students' interest and motivation after using the memrise application in vocabulary learning. From the results obtained, it was concluded that memrise application is recommended to be used as an alternative method in teaching vocabulary. Besides students, with this Memrise application, it can add to the teacher's insight about the use of methods in teaching in the classroom.
The objective of this study is to find out the difficulties of writing descriptive text and what factors causing difficulties in writing descriptive text. This study involved 12 students in eighth grade of junior high school in Cipongkor. To obtain the data, three kinds of the research instruments were used, namely a writing test (Heaton, 1988), questionnaire and observation. The findings based on the writing test showed that the errors produced by the students were missordering with 33.6%, the punctuation 26.8%, the tenses 17.4%, wrong diction 12.1%, spelling 7.4%, and the last is prepositions 2.7%. Based on the questionnaire and observation, the factors caused students difficulties in writing descriptive text are lack of interest in learning English, the poor understanding of the generic structure of descriptive test, poor in grammar knowledge and use, and the low motivation in writing descriptive text.
