Pregnant women with pre-gestational diabetes on metformin are at a higher risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes than the general population. This appears to be due to the underlying diabetes since women on metformin for other indications do not present meaningfully increased risks.

Preventive actions should focus on more systematic allergy checks when prescribing drugs and on dose adaptation in cases of altered renal function.

Anti-infective drugs, mainly antiretroviral therapy, account for the majority of ADRs reported in neonates. The specific issue of drug maladministration and medication errors remains to be addressed in neonates.
