Objectives: The global objective of the survey was to determine the grasscutter age from the anogenital distance. Methodology and results: Some linear (anogenital distance) and weight measurements were taken on 390 anesthetized grasscutters (202 males and 188 females) aged from two weeks to 12 months. The results led to eight linear prediction equation models of grasscutter age from anogenital distance and body weight. The best determined grasscutter age with an elevated coefficient value was: Age =-5.50 + 0.37 x DAG + 0.01 x WT with R 2 = 0.98. The Equation determining grasscutter age with a weak determination coefficients value was: Age =-18.22 +1.26 x DAG with R 2 = 0.88. These models of equations can be used by literate breeders or researchers and in semi-intensive and intensive raisings. Conclusions and application of findings: These results are useful to predict not recorded age of raised grasscutter, estimate game grasscutter age, make better management of reproduction and a good sanitary follow-up, and improvement of farming conditions, compare wild and raised grasscutter meat since meat organoleptic quality generally varies according to age.
RESUMEDans le but de déterminer l'âge de l'aulacode (Thryonomys swinderianus Temminck, 1827) au Bénin, une étude a été réalisée sur les caractères morphométriques tels que la longueur tête-corps (LTC), la longueur de la queue (LQ), la longueur de l'oreille (LO), la longueur du pied postérieur gauche (LPPG) sans les griffes, le pourtour du cou (PC), le pourtour de la tête (PT), le pourtour thoracique (Pth) et le poids vif corporel de l'aulacode. Tous ces paramètres ont été mesurés et pris à l'aide d'un mètre ruban, d'un pied à coulisse et d'un peson après anesthésie de 202 mâles et de 188 femelles âgés de 2 semaines à 12 mois. Des résultats obtenus, il ressort qu'une forte corrélation existe d'une part entre les différents caractères avec un coefficient de détermination variant entre 0,764 et 0,968 et d'autre part entre l'âge de l'animal et ces caractères avec un coefficient de détermination variant entre 0,858 et 0,954. Chez l'aulacode femelle, en prenant en compte un seul caractère, les deux meilleures équations données par le Modèle Linéaire Simple (MLS) ont été Age = 3,383 + 0,015PV, avec R 2 = 0,56 et Age = 3,403 + 0,043PM, avec R 2 = 0,58. Celles obtenues avec deux caractères ont été les suivantes : Age = -1,481 + 0,098LPPG + 0,014PV, avec R 2 = 0,56 ; Age = -11,524 + 0,128PT + 0,010PV, avec R 2 = 0,56 ; Age = -1,491 + 0,108LPPG + 0,041PM, avec R 2 = 0,57 ; Age = -11,544 + 0,148PT + 0,032PM, avec R 2 = 0,58. Celles obtenues avec trois caractères ont été Age = 6,488 -0,164LQ + 0,385LPPG + 0,016PV, avec R 2 = 0,57, Age = 6,498 -0,174LQ + 0,395LPPG + 0,046PM, avec R 2 = 0,59 et Age = -11,479 + 0,035LPPG + 0,141PT + 0,032PM, avec R 2 = 0,59. Celle donnée par le Modèle Linéaire Généralisé (MLG) en prenant en compte un seul caractère a été Age= e 0,248 + 0,016PC avec AIC = 1.972,9 et celle obtenue avec deux caractères a été Age= e 0,033 + 0,013LPPG + 0,011PT avec AIC = 1.944. Les équations de régression ainsi élaborées peuvent être utilisées pour estimer l'âge de l'aulacode.
The aim is to evaluate the characteristics of the carcass and nutritional values of the meat of bred grasscutter fed with pellets.27 farmed grasscutters aged 7 months and of average weight 2.3 kg were used and divided into three groups of 9 grasscutters. The experimental device is a complete random block with three treatments and three replicates.At the end of the trial, one-third of the grasscutters were randomly selected from each group for determination of the carcass characteristics and nutritional value of the meat.Results showed that the live weight at slaughter of grasscutters varied from 2796 ± 35.07 g to 2876 ± 55.95 g (p>0.05).The difference was not significant between the cold carcass yield of grasscutters fed with the three pellets (p>0.05). However, it was significant between the warm carcass yield of bred grasscutters (p<0.05).The length of the carcass varied from 26.46 ± 0.57 cm to 27.82 ± 0.58 cm in the grasscutters with the pellets (p>0.05).The meat of grasscutters contains a crude protein content ranging from 17.26 ± 0.02 to 22.6 ± 0.02% and fat matter from 3.5 ± 0.07 to 7.05 ± 0.06%.The difference between the moisture, protein and fat matter content between meats of the grasscutters fed with the three pellets was significant (p<0.05).The grasscutters bred fed with pellets 1 and 3 contain the best protein levels and low fat content.They can be used in grasscutters breeding for the production of grasscutters meats of good nutritional qualities.

The objective is to evaluate the in vivo digestibility of 3 food rations at based on green fodders, products and by-products of maize and other food ingredients in the grasscutters in captivity. Methodology and Results: 24 grasscutters breeding aged five months divided into three lots of eight were installed in digestibility cages. The average food consumption ranged from 59.19 ± 8.80 g to 145.67 ± 6.44 g for the three rations. The apparent digestive utilisation coefficient (CUDa) in percentage for dry matter was from 78.10 ± 0.01 and 82.19 ± 0.02. That of the protein varied from 87.57 ± 5.69 to 90.83 ± 0.03% and the estimated crude fibre ranged from 74.51 ± 0.07 to 78.44 ± 0.03% for three rations. Conclusions and Application:The ration 2 consists of green fodders, products and by-products maize and other food ingredients is the most consumed and digested by of the grasscutters and ration 3 consists of products and by-products of maize is the least. The food ration 2 can be used by the grasscutters breeders for animal feed to improve the digestibility and performance for sustainable production of grasscutters.
