-The Southern Adriatic Sea is one of the five prospective areas for CO 2 storage being evaluated under the three year (FP7) European SiteChar project dedicated to the characterization of European CO 2 storage sites. The potential reservoir for CO 2 storage is represented by a carbonate formation, the wackstones and packstones of the Scaglia Formation (Upper CretaceousPaleogene). In this paper, we present the geological characterization and the 3D modeling that led to the identification of three sites, named Grazia, Rovesti and Grifone, where the Scaglia Formation, with an average thickness of 50 m, reveals good petrophysical characteristics and is overlain by an up to 1 200 thick caprock. The vicinity of the selected sites to the Enel -Federico II power plant (one of the major Italian CO 2 emittor) where a pilot plant for CO 2 capture has been already started in April 2010, represents a good opportunity to launch the first Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) pilot project in Italy and to apply this technology at industrial level, strongly contributing at the same time at reducing the national CO 2 emissions.Re´sume´-Le sud de l'Adriatique, un secteur potentiel pour le stockage du CO 2 -Le sud de la mer Adriatique est l'un des cinq secteurs a`avoir e´te´e´value´pour le stockage du CO 2 dans le cadre du projet europe´en FP7 SiteChar qui a dure´trois ans. Le re´servoir potentiel de CO 2 consiste en une formation de carbonates, les wackestones et les packstones de la formation de la Scaglia (limite Cre´tace´-Pale´oge`ne). Nous pre´sentons dans cet article la caracte´risation ge´ologique et le mode`le 3D qui ont permis l'identification de trois sites, appele´s Grazia, Rovesti et Grifone, au niveau desquels la formation de la Scaglia, d'une e´paisseur moyenne de 50 m, pre´sente des bonnes caracte´ristiques pe´trophysiques et est recouverte d'un caprock d'une e´paisseur allant jusqu'a1 200 m. La proximite´des sites se´lectionne´s avec la centrale e´lectrique Enel -Federico II (un des e´metteurs de CO 2 italiens les plus importants), ou`une installation pilote pour la capture du CO 2 a de´ja`e´te´mise en place a`partir d'avril 2010, repre´sente une bonne opportunite´pour lancer le premier projet pilote Capture et Stockage du CO 2 (CSC) en Italie et pour appliquer cette technologie a`un niveau industriel, en contribuant fortement en meˆme temps a`la re´duction des e´missions nationales de CO 2 .
