The influence of water, carbohydrate and protein on ovarian development was investigated. Carrion was the most effective of the protein sources tested, followed by faeces of dog, rabbit, horse and possum in that order. Sucrose and water were both required for complete ovarian development. If the protein source was dog faeces, a separate source of water was not required. If a complete batch of eggs could not be produced, ovarian development ceased, usually at the onset of yolk deposition.

The green vegetable bug. Nezara viridula (L.) is a pest of soybeans in New South Wales. Investigations were carried out to determine the effects of time and level of infestation, and hug instar on soybean seed yield and quality. Adults were found to cause more damage than nymphs. There was no difference in the degree of damage caused by male and female adults, however. fourth instar nymphs caused more damage than second instars. Early infestations caused more damage than late infestations. The highest infestation level tested of two bugs per metre late in the season did not produce economic damage.

The Australian members of the Scutelleridae are revised. Twelve species are recognized. Descriptions, diagnostic measurements and keys are provided for the identification of these species. The following new synonymy is recognized: Coleotichus discrepans Walker, 1867, C. sordidus Walker, 1867, C. nigrovarians Walker, 1867, and C, testaceous Walker, 1867, as junior synonyms of Coleotichus artensis (Montrouzier, 1858); Philiafulgurans, Stal 1873, P. aerea Distant, 1892, P. femorata Distant, 1899, and P. insignis Schouteden, 1904, are junior synonyms of Lampromicra senator (Fabricius, 1803); and Calliscyta australis Distant, 1899 is a junior synonym of Choerocoris stalii (Vollenhoven, 1863). Choerocoris stalii (Vollenhoven, 1863) is transferred from Calliscyta. A new subfamily, Tectocorinae, is erected for Tectocoris Hahn, 1834.

AbsiractThe green stink bug is commonly found on the flower Sulviu splendens Ker-Gawl, and is a minor pest of tomatoes and other vegetables. The egg and the five nymphal instars are described and figured. The duration of each stage in the life cycle has been recorded at 26 1 2°C .
