The medical records of 45 dogs with histopathologically confirmed osteosarcomas arising from flat or irregular bones were reviewed. Thirty-five percent of the dogs eventually developed metastases. Telangectatic tumors and tumors arising from the rib and scapula had the highest prevalence of metastases. Survival times were short, with an overall median survival time of 120 days. Anatomic site, body weight, and completeness of surgical excision were found to be prognostic factors. Dogs with mandibular osteosarcomas in this study had shorter survival times than those times recently reported. 21 Local recurrence was the most common cause of death or euthanasia in this population of dogs.
In areas in which B marinus toads are endemic, toad intoxication should be considered in the differential diagnosis for dogs with an acute onset of neurologic abnormalities, hyperemic mucous membranes, and ptyalism, especially during the spring and summer months. The prognosis is good for dogs with toad intoxication that receive appropriate treatment.

HistoryA 5-year-old spayed female Doberman Pinscher was evaluated for progressive erythema and edema with serous fluid oozing from the skin of the fifth digit on the left hind foot for the preceding 6 weeks. The dog had also been intermittently lame. The referring veterinarian had administered ampicillin (dose and frequency unknown) orally for 1 week with no improvement and observed swelling proximal to the tarsus on follow-up examination. Amputation of the digit was recommended, and the dog was referred.Physical examination revealed a non-weight-bearing lameness of the left hind limb and erythema and edema of the fifth digit with a small amount of serous fluid containing blood oozing from the skin. There was generalized edema of the left tarsus, and the dog had signs of pain on palpation of the tarsus. The dog' s overall body condition was thin to cachexic. Lateral and dorsoplantar radiographs of the distal portion of the left hind limb were obtained (Fig 1).Determine whether additional imaging studies are required, or make your diagnosis from Figure 1-then turn the page * * VETERINARY MEDICINE TODAYFigure 1-Lateral (A) and dorsoplantar (B) radiographic views of the distal portion of the left hind limb of a 5-year-old spayed female dog evaluated for intermittent lameness and progressive erythema and edema of the fifth digit.
