Feminism is a movement of struggle to fight against all forms of objectification of women. The main character in the Cigarette Girl novel is a very independent woman. It was analyzed through feminism approach if the literary work is related to a woman as one of the characters in the story. The objective of this research is to describe the resistances of woman’s struggle in Cigarette Girl Novel by Ratih Kumala. This reseacrh is analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method and used feminism approach to Beauvoir theory. The findings of this research are women can work, women can become intellectuals, and to transcend its boundaries. The result of this research that the women have same capability to survive in their lives as the men do therefore all the things that is point to them such as second sex, retarded, limited and weak go vague and even disappear because of the story which is told by the writer of the novel.
The purpose of this article is to analyze the type of metaphor and analyze the meaning in the lyrics of the song "Fall for You" the method uses a qualitative approach because the data used in the form of song lyrics. Document analysis is applied to find the connotation meaning contained in the song lyrics, the messages contained in the song, as well as the contribution of the connotations to the messages in the song. The writers collected data by downloading songs along with lyrics, reading song lyrics, and creating phrases that contain metaphorical meanings. Then the writers analyzed the data by identifying the meaning, find the intent contained in the song, and connect with the types of metapor. The results of the discussion data show that there are. There are seven types of meaning in the data are: conceptual, connotative, social, affective, reflective, collocative and thematic meaning. The song uses metaphor and other types of meaning to embellish the song and to convey the implicit message in the song. The messages contained in the song are mostly persuasive. metaphors found in song lyrics have an important role in creating certain feelings and conveying messages. Keywords
Research on the use of digital technology in promoting English Foreign Language (EFL) students’ self-directed learning of listening skills has been widely acknowledged in the literature. However, few empirical studies have been conducted on interactive worksheets as mediated instruction in the teaching of listening. This study used a qualitative method, and seventy-seven students were selected from the Education Department at State University of Makassar. This research instrument is used in interviews. Grounded in a web-based learning approach, the researchers investigated the students’ perceived experiences in conducting the “liveworksheet” website and its potential to promote their self-learning, activeness, and autonomy in listening practices. As a result, the study highlights several significant findings: students’ self-directed learning, automatic scoring, accessing the website, students’ vocabulary mastery, students’ learning autonomy, and students’ technology skills. Moreover, this study suggests employing web-based “liveworksheet” activities in a technology-mediated EFL learning environment, thus increasing their self-directed learning and ease to make distance learning happen through the website. Therefore, this study highlighted the advantages of in-making live worksheets for teachers and students in answering live worksheets which are very important to support, provide interesting learning, and get their learning outcomes
Students' self-confidence in speaking English remains low. Many students are still embarrassed to speak English since teachers use outdated teaching methods. This study aims to explore students' perspectives on using live-streaming projects on the Facebook group in EFL classes. This study involved forty English Department students at a university in Makassar, Indonesia. They engaged in the live streaming project-based learning (PBL) using the Facebook group in language learning in English classes. Four participants from the four groups consisting of ten participants were selected through random sampling and agreed to participate in a semi-structured interview. The qualitative data obtained from the interview were analyzed through a thematic analysis. Results show that live streaming on the Facebook group as PBL facilitated and increased the students’ learning autonomy, technology skill, self-regulated learning, and English-speaking confidence in EFL classes. The findings suggest the practical implications of PBL in the live streaming project using the Facebook group on online educational activity, particularly in EFL classes, for enhancing students’ learning autonomy, technology skill, self-regulated learning, and confidence in speaking English.
This research investigates the learning strategies used by English as a foreign language (EFL) students and gender differences in the strategy inventory for language learning (SILL) in Indonesia. To gather the data, this study employed quantitative descriptive methods with a Google form-based questionnaire involving 110 college students, and the data were analysed using SPSS 25. The fifty items of the questionnaire were divided into six strategies: memory strategy, cognitive strategy, metacognitive strategy, compensation strategy, emotion strategy, and social strategy. Findings of the study indicate that the students use all the strategies in learning English, and all these strategies are in a high level of use except for memory strategy which is in a moderate level. Gender differences data show that most male students preferred the social strategy (36%), whereas most female students preferred metacognitive strategy (56.47%) suggesting that male and female students have different learning styles. The results of this research shed light on the importance of raising teachers’ awareness of their students’ diversity in learning strategies. Thus, teachers should improve their repertoire of teaching techniques and strategies to meet students’ different learning styles in the classroom. ABSTRAKPenelitian ini menyelidiki strategi pembelajaran yang digunakan oleh siswa bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing (EFL) dan perbedaan gender dalam inventarisasi strategi untuk pembelajaran bahasa (SILL) di Indonesia. Untuk mengumpulkan data, penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan kuesioner berbasis Google form yang melibatkan 110 mahasiswa, dan data dianalisis menggunakan SPSS 25. Lima puluh item kuesioner dibagi menjadi enam strategi: strategi memori, strategi kognitif, strategi metakognitif. strategi, strategi kompensasi, strategi emosi, dan strategi sosial. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa menggunakan semua strategi dalam belajar bahasa Inggris, dan semua jenis strategi berada di tingkat tinggi kecuali strategi memori yang berada di tingkat sedang. Data perbedaan gender menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar siswa laki-laki lebih menyukai strategi sosial (36%), sedangkan sebagian besar siswa perempuan lebih menyukai strategi metakognitif (56,47%) menunjukkan bahwa siswa laki-laki dan perempuan memiliki gaya belajar yang berbeda secara signifikan. Hasil penelitian ini menyoroti pentingnya meningkatkan kesadaran guru tentang keragaman siswa mereka dalam strategi pembelajaran. Dengan demikian, guru harus meningkatkan repertoar teknik dan strategi pengajaran mereka untuk memenuhi gaya belajar siswa yang berbeda di kelas.
