Background: Maxillary sinus is pyramidal cavity located in the body of maxilla; represent the largest and closest paranasal sinus to oral cavity. Maxillary sinus shape, size and volume affected by any developmental disturbance occur in midfacial area such as cleft lip and palate. The aim of this study is to evaluate maxillary sinus volume in cleft lip/palate patients and compare it to control normal subjects by using Cone Beam Computed Tomography. Material and method: Thirty four Cone Beam Computed Tomography images (17 of cleft patients and 17 controls) were collected, and Maxillary sinus volume was measured in cleft patients (cleft side and non-cleft sidd), and control group (right and left side).Comparison between study groups and statistical analysis was done. Results: the mean of sinus volume in cleft side was 7.76±2.4 mm 3 , in non-cleft side was 9.03±2.2 mm 3 , and in control group(mean of right and left side) was 11.34±2.8 mm 3 .maxillary sinus volume of cleft side was smaller than non-cleft side with no statistical significant difference. But there was high significant difference when compared to control group P= 0.0009. Conclusion:cleft lip and palate affect the normal development of maxillary sinus in cleft side. knowledge about maxillary sinus anatomy and volume is important point for surgeon required in sinus surgery, implant placement and any treatment of craniofacial disease.
Background:The alveolar process which is bearing of the teeth, tooth extraction is the common cause of alveolar ridge resorption, occlusal radiographical technique of the mandibular arch has the ability to determine the size of the outer and inner cortical bone of the mandible.
Aim of the Study:The aim of this study is to assist the bucco-lingual width of mandibular bone at molar area in relation to dental status in occlusal film.Material and Method: 30 patients (15 dentulous and 15 edentulous) 18-25 years old, they were collected from popular clinic in Baghdad and referred to diagnosis department of Collage of Dentistry/ University of Baghdad. An occlusal film is placed into patient mouth, so that it is centered over molar area on the side to be radiographed. After exposure and film processing, a Varnier caliper is used to measure the width of bone. Results: in SPSS statistic, by calculating the Mean, Stander Deviation and P-Value we found that the bone width of edentulous patients is less than the bone width of the dentulous patient in the posterior area of the mandible.
Conclusion:we concluded that the bone width of the edentulous patients is less than the bone width of dentulous patients in the posterior area of the mandible due to loss of mandibular molars.Clinical Significance: These inevitably changes will affect the oral health and function, the dental team faces the challenge of creating a prosthetic restoration such as dentures or more importantly implants to compensate or eliminates these adverse effects. Sufficient alveolar bone volume and favorable architecture of the alveolar ridge are essential to obtain optimal functional and aesthetic prosthetic reconstructions.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
