The launching of the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1981 marked the beginning of a new era for Americans in space. During this era, increasing numbers of people will live and work in space for prolonged periods of time. This article reviews some of the psychological aspects of contemporary and impending space missions and discusses how the knowledge and skills of the psychological community can contribute to the program's success.
