The Eastern Galicia Magnetic Anomaly (EGMA) is a conspicuous feature of the aeromagnetic map of Iberia, which structurally overlaps the Lugo and Sanabria domes, two spatially linked late Variscan extensional structures that delineate a segment of the Ibero‐Armorican Arc. In the northern part of the Lugo Dome, the Xistral Tectonic Window exposes a deep section of the continental crust, which includes several extensional detachments and associated shear zones. The aim is to check whether or not there is a correlation between the extensional process and the EGMA. A map of the magnetic anomaly of the Xistral Tectonic Window acquired on land improves the resolution of the aeromagnetic data and shows that the EGMA is actually composed by several shorter wavelength anomalies reaching amplitudes up to 1,214 nT. Their location in relation to outcropping rocks and structures, together with 2‐D modeling, shows a conspicuous link between the anomalies and the extensional detachments. On a larger scale, the EGMA forms the northern part of a largeanomaly occupying the core of the Central Iberian Arc. This anomaly can be related to extension caused by gravitational collapse of the thickened Variscan crust, implying that like the EGMA, local anomalies might reflect extensional structures, many of which may remain buried. Our study may shed light on the origin of magnetic anomalies in other gneiss domes as it shows that they can be related with the doming process instead of being inherited from older rocks presently outcropping at the core of the domes.
The Órdenes Complex is the largest Variscan allochthonous structure of NW Iberia, and preserves the suture of a long‐standing Paleozoic ocean, probably the Rheic. Gravity and magnetic data, the latter specifically acquired on land for this study, show that the complex occupies the core of an open synform with a maximum depth of 9–10 km, which contrasts with the flat geometry of the lower crust and Moho discontinuity beneath. The maximum depth reached by the ophiolitic rocks marking the suture is around 7 km. The allochthonous units formed by basic and ultrabasic rocks are lens‐shaped in section, and occur not only at the periphery of the complex, but form wide ribbons trending NE‐SW to N‐S. The Bouguer anomaly related with the longest of them, the Fornás Unit, previously used to support an autochthonous interpretation of the complexes, is modeled as a rootless, massive amphibolite body with a maximum thickness of 6 km located at the downthrown block of a large normal fault cutting across previous thrust faults and extensional detachments. The main magnetic anomalies are associated with ultrabasic rocks cropping out in the NW and SE, but a weak, wide anomaly in the central part of the complex is related with one or more thin layers of amphibolite partly mineralized with massive sulphides. The weakly arcuate geometry of this anomaly and of the Bouguer anomaly caused by the Fornás Unit may reflect the NE flank of the Central Iberian arc, an orocline whose core is occupied by the allochthonous complexes.
Aeromagnetic data are a valuable source of geological information. Regional datasets have been commonly used to (1) establish the depth to the Curie Point and hence the thermal structure of large areas (An

The Eastern Galicia Magnetic Anomaly (EGMA) is one of the most conspicuous and, definitively, the best studied of all the magnetic anomalies in the Central Iberian Arc (CIA). This is probably due to its location, on the thoroughly researched Lugo-Sanabria gneiss dome and to the unique fact that its source rocks crop out in the Xistral Tectonic Window. Multiple studies and models of this anomaly have been carried out in the last 25 years and still, new results keep on shedding more light on its understanding. Rock magnetic analyses, natural remanent magnetization, anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility and stable isotopes geochemistry carried out on the rocks that produce this anomaly have provided new insights on the processes that led to magnetization and on its age. Results suggest that magnetization of source rocks is a consequence of the increase in oxygen fugacity underwent by metamorphic and magmatic rocks affected by late-Variscan extensional tectonics. Extensional detachments were the pathways that allowed the entrance of fluids that led to syn-tectonic crystallization of magnetite and hematite in S-Type granites. Accordingly, magnetization is not really linked to primary lithologies but mostly to extensional structures. This process took place in the late Carboniferous to earliest Permian, during the Kiaman reverse superchron. Natural remanent magnetization exhibited by hematite-bearing samples confirms the age of the magnetization and adds complexity to the interpretation of the EGMA, where remanence has been often largely ignored or underestimated. Understanding the origin of the EGMA contributes to the interpretation of other anomalies existing in the CIA, also located on thermal domes. Furthermore, it provides new hints to interpret magnetic anomalies located in extensional tectonic contexts worldwide
