The place of the Barthel index as the standard outcome measure for populations of stroke patients is still justified for long term follow up, and may be a proxy for different outcome measures intended for the assessment of other domains.

A stroke register has enabled the amount of physiotherapy received by residents of a rural health authority in Southern England to be estimated. The study provides a unique overview of who receives therapy, the quantities received and the relationship between physiotherapy and disability 1year after a stroke.
