El mundo de placer ofrecido por la Belle Époque europea, como se la imaginaba la elite latinoamericana, creó una visión romántica de París que chocaba con el ennui del país nativo. Este conflicto puede compararse productivamente con la tensión entre ideal y spleen explorado décadas antes por Baudelaire en Las flores del mal (1857). Un ejemplo chileno de este fenómeno aparece en dos novelas chilenas emblemáticas, Los trasplantados (1904) de Alberto Blest Gana y Criollos en París (1933) de Joaquín Edwards Bello, que muestra personajes infectados por la parisitis, una adicción a los placeres corruptos de la ciudad. La novela de Edwards Bello incluye al personaje de Jorge Dueñas, un retrato apenas disimulado del extraordinario personaje de sociedad Jorge Cuevas, quien, en su novela corta El amigo Jacques (1912), basa a su vez su personaje principal en su amigo Edwards Bello y contribuye una respuesta similarmente ambivalente a la construcción de una identidad latinoamericana moderna.
