tians and their Jewish friends divide: one believing that Old Testament theology reaches its fruition in the Talmud and the other testifying that "the redemptive drama" has its denoument in Jesus, who is confessed to be the Christ.Someone has said that history exists only in the mind of the historian. That idealistic notion must be an extreme reaction to the historical positivism which maintains that the historian tells it as it actually was. Surely the historian, though seeing things from the ground on which he or she stands, is capable of writing about real events and concrete situations in the life of a people of the past. However, if history is to be retold in such a manner that there is continuity in the midst of change, intelligibility in the sea of complex phenomena, and direction in the course of temporal movement, then there must be a historian who attempts to comprehend the whole and who narrates the story faithfully and appealingly. John Bright has given us such a re-presentation of the history of Israel, one which will appeal to readers for a long time to corne and which will stand as a testament to the vigor of twentieth century historical research.
