This paper describes the implementation of a Monte Carlo based short-circuit analysis package in a hypercube parallel computer . The program generates accurate estimates of short-circuit current probability distribution curves which can be used in a variety of planning and design studies. Both network modeling aspects, such as network reduced equivalencing and mutual coupling representation, as well as the impact of the sample sizes used in Monte Carlo simulations are fully analyzed and illustrated by numerical results obtained testing on real-world systems. These examples clearly illustrate how computational efficiency in parallel machines varies with the ratio of communication to computation (communication overhead) and of the load balancing among the parallel computer processors.
On August 5th, one year passed since Alcir Monticelli left us. His legacy is very present in power system applications, which was his speciality. Significant improvements in power systems have undergone in the last decades and Alcir Monticelli has importantly taken part of the transformation process with his amazing capacity to interact with the academic area as a professor and also as a researcher working toward practical solutions to the most challenging problems in power systems. In this article, which is an invitation from Revista Controle & Automação (SBA) to honor the Alcir's memory, we will remember some of his major contributions to the power systems area and also register the recognition of his work worldwide
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
