Background: The aim of the study is to estimate the level of knowledge about retinoblastoma (Rb) and its determinants among non-ophthalmic health professionals of Qassim region of Saudi Arabia. Methods: This cross-sectional survey was held in 2016 in primary health centres (PHC) and general hospitals in the study area. In addition to demography like age, gender, education, place of work, participants replied to five questions related to Rb with close-ended questions to respond. They were matched to the expert group's answers to estimate the level of knowledge. Results: One hundred and fifty-two non-ophthalmic doctors participated in the survey. The excellent grade of knowledge of Rb was in 66 [43.3% (95% confidence interval 35.5-51.3)] of participants. Very poor level of knowledge was noted in 13 [8.6% (95% CI 4.1-13.0)] participants. Male gender (P = 0.02) and physician category (P = 0.02) were significantly associated with the excellent grade of Rb related knowledge. The participant’s response by type of questions varied significantly (P<0.001).Conclusions: More than half of the non-ophthalmic health professionals had less than desired knowledge about Rb. Health education about Rb to health professionals could be gender sensitive and based on the type of profession. Increasing the awareness about retinoblastoma among non-ophthalmic health professional is important.
Carcinosarcoma ex pleomorphic adenoma is a rare malignant neoplasm, with most cases reported in the parotid gland. We herein report a case of a 75-year-old male referred to our hospital with a long-standing right parotid lesion that was treated in an outside hospital by a superficial parotidectomy. The patient reported a painful, rapidly enlarging mass following the excision. Histopathological examination showed the proliferation of malignant epithelial and mesenchymal elements with a solid sheet of Langerhans cells admixed with eosinophils. The Langerhans cells were reactive to CD1a and BRAF; hence, a diagnosis of carcinosarcoma ex pleomorphic adenoma with Langerhans cell histiocytosis was given. Complete clinical and radiographic workup showed no other organ involvement. The patient underwent total parotidectomy with adjuvant chemoradiation; however, the tumor progressed and showed lung metastasis. We herein report the first case of a concurrent Langerhans cell histiocytosis with associated carcinosarcoma ex pleomorphic adenoma.
Giant cell tumor of soft tissue (GCT-ST) is a rare tumor of low malignant potential. Grossly and histologically similar to its bone counterpart. Majority has benign clinical course and rarely metastasizes. This is a case of a 46-year-old woman with a giant cell tumor of soft tissue of the knee. This tumor was not suspected clinically and was initially diagnosed as septic infra-patellar bursitis. The diagnosis of GCT-ST was made after histopathological examination. Herein, we describe the clinical, histologic, and immunohistochemical features of this rare neoplasm.
Background: Recent data from large samples of healthy adolescents show that the rates of hypertension and prehypertension in adolescents are greater than expected and are increasing. Children with elevated blood pressure can develop target organ damage. This work aimed to estimate the prevalence of hypertension and to describe some related characteristics of cases in adolescent preparatory and secondary school girls of Riyadh city, KSA. Methods: A cross-sectional study conducted among a cluster sample of adolescent preparatory and secondary school girls of Riyadh city, KSA during the academic year 2016-2017. Data collected via a predesigned and pretested questionnaire to collect the relevant data. Results: In the studied adolescent girls, 6 (3.8%) were hypertensive; previously diagnosed and on treatment, 0.6% were ex-smoker and 1.9% were smokers. Two girls (1.2%) had renal disease, 2.4% had bronchial asthma, one girl (0.6%) had hypothyroidism and 0.6% had depression. Half of the cases aged 18 years, 33.3% aged 17 years and 16.7% aged 19 years (Mean (±SD) age of cases was 15.3 (± 2.8)). Conclusion: in adolescent preparatory and secondary school girls of Riyadh city, KSA, 3.8% were hypertensive. So health-care providers should recognize the increased risk of prehypertension and hypertension and should seek to identify and manage the modifiable risk factors in those adolescent girls.
