The extant literature indicates that social work is a high stress profession owing to multifarious and complex demands of practice. There is also evidence of stress experienced by student trainees who aspire for a career in social work. Working with service users and the distressing life scenarios encountered on placement often involves negotiating complex emotions and requires reflective skills. Effective practice requires rapport building skills and the ability to demonstrate empathy is a core skill for effective practice. While there is a plethora of Western literature on these issues, the Indian literature has not adequately explored them. Framed against this background, this quantitative study collected data from students of all three years of their undergraduate social work course from a 'women only' college in India. Standardised instruments to assess empathy, reflective ability and emotional intelligence were administered.Statistical tests revealed a higher manifestation of these dimensions in final year students than those in the first year. Further it was seen that the total emotional intelligence and empathy scores were positively correlated. Implications of these findings for the education and training of social work students has also been discussed in this article.
ObjectivesThough dissertation is mandatory for postgraduates (PG), it is unknown if adequate knowledge on plagiarism exists at that level. Thus, we intended to study the knowledge and attitude towards plagiarism among junior doctors in India.DesignCross-sectional studySettingPG medical residents and Junior faculty from various teaching institutions across south India.ParticipantsA total of N=786 doctors filled the questionnaires of which approximately 42.7% were from government medical colleges (GMCs) and the rest from private institutions.MethodsParticipants were given a pretested semistructured questionnaire which contained: (1) demographic details; (2) a quiz developed by Indiana University, USA to assess knowledge and (3) Attitudes towards Plagiarism Questionnaire (ATPQ).Outcome measuresThe Primary outcome measure was knowledge about plagiarism. The secondary outcome measure was ATPQ scores.ResultsA total of N=786 resident doctors and junior faculty from across 11 institutions participated in this study. Of this, 42.7% were from GMCs and 60.6% were women. The mean (SD) knowledge score was 4.43 (1.99) out of 10. The factors (adjusted OR; 95% CI; p value) that emerged as significant predictors of knowledge were number of years in profession (−0.181; −0.299 to –0.062; 0.003), no previous publication (0.298; 0.099 to 0.498; 0.003) and working in a GMC (0.400; 0.106 to 0.694; 0.008). The overall mean (SD) scores of the three attitude components were: Permissive attitudes—37.33 (5.33), critical attitudes —20.32 (4.82) and subjective norms—31.05 (4.58), all of which corresponded to the moderate category.ConclusionParticipants lacked adequate knowledge on how to avoid plagiarism suggesting a need for a revamp in medical education curriculum in India by incorporating research and publication ethics.
In this paper, the investigator indicates the emotional intelligence plays an important role in life and contributes to the personal and social development of an individual. There is something beyond the intellectual capacity, which determines the success of a person. A survey of the study of emotional intelligence of the higher secondary school teachers should be analyzed and the investigator has launched the investigation. The sample was limited to 350 higher secondary school teachers only. The study was restricted to higher secondary Teachers only. The study was restricted to Chengalpattu Educational District only. Only the survey method is used to collect data. The Emotional Intelligence Inventory tool was used in the study. The tool was designed and developed by Thomas Alexander (2004). The investigator used the ‘test-retest’ method in establishing the reliability of the tool on emotional intelligence. The responses of both the test and retest were scored and the Correlation Coefficient of 0.74 was found between the test and retest. The means score value of male teachers 55.15 and the means score value of female teachers is 56.64. The table value 1.96 is lesser than the calculated value t value. There is no significant difference between male and female higher secondary school Teachers in their Emotional Intelligence. Hence the null hypothesis is accepted. Teachers also should have proper training in developing their Emotional Intelligence and in improving their Social attachment.
WHO Global Database on Anaemia for 1993-2005, covering almost half of the world’s population, estimated the prevalence of anaemia worldwide at 25 per cent.The aim of the study is to determine the effectiveness of honey dates amla mix on biochemical markers among adolescent girls with Iron deficiency anaemia. Quantitative experimental and control group pre and post-test design was used in this study. The study was conducted among adolescent girls in two different residential homes. Total study population is 170 adolescent girls were selected by simple random sampling technique. 85 adolescents girls were assigned to the experimental group and 85 participants in control group. For experimental group honey dates amla mix was given for 3 months whereas in the control group iron and folic acid supplementation were provided. The study results shows that pre and post-test intervention scores of control and experimental group were compared by Wilcoxon scores rank test. Comparison of pre-test and post-test scores of severity of anemia, clinical variables, and level of fatigue and level of satisfaction, bio chemical parameters (reticulocytes, MCV, haematocrite, serum iron, serum ferritin, TIBC) were assessed in both experimental and control group. Between the experimental and control group (unpaired‘t’ test) reticulocytes, mcv, heamatocrite, serum iron serum ferritin showed significant changes in the pre test and post-test but there is no changes in TIBC. The study concluded that alternative nutritional therapy was effective for enhancing the blood heamoglobin & biochemical paramteres level, decreased the clinical variables and fatigue level among the adolescent girls with iron deficiency anemia.
