Abstract. Understanding the generation and evolution of cratonic lithospheric keels requires detailed knowledge of their age, timescale of formation, and the relationship between the crust and mantle part of the lithosphere. Re-Os isotope analyses of peridotitc xenoliths from Lesotho kimherlites indicate that large portions of the lithospheric keel beneath the SE Kaapvaal craton were stabilized during the late Archean. This process and subsequent additions of new lithospheric mantle coincide with events recorded by lower crustal xenolith studies from this region.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
