The developm'!nt of retail activity in the towns within the modern Johannesburg Metropolitan area from the time of the first pe~manent settlement in 1886 until the present day is traced. A~. attempt IS ma~e to establish links between population growth and mobilIty and the racial composition of the residents in the area. A critical assessment of the available data is considered together with the problems associated with time series measurement.
