In patients, as in animal models of severe LV pressure overload hypertrophy, myocardial dysfunction is associated with increased microtubules, suggesting that this may be one mechanism contributing to the development of congestive heart failure in patients with AS.

Mitral annular area and shape did not change during the cardiac cycle after ring annuloplasty, regardless of ring type. Thus mitral annular area reduction, independent of intrinsic ring flexibility, is the chief mechanism responsible for the salutary effects of mitral ring annuloplasty.

Partial Tailor flexible ring annuloplasty fixed mitral annular area and dimensions throughout the cardiac cycle in sheep; however, it preserved physiologic mitral annular folding dynamics, which might be important in terms of long-term valve function and prevention of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction.
