We show that particle size, morphology, nanocrystallinity, surface area, and defect density of (Y,Eu)VO4 structures can be tuned by one-pot colloidal conversion of rare earth hydroxycarbonates in water/ethylene glycol (EG)...

Glyphosate, a non-selective herbicide with systemic action, is one of the most widely used substances in modern agriculture. With the objective of comparing the efficiency of glyphosate previously complexed with copper (Cu421) with that of the commercial product (Roundup WG®) and the purified substance (purified glyphosate) in controlling Brachiaria decumbens Stapf (signal grass), tests were conducted of the in vitro and in vivo activity of the enzymes 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPs) and phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL). The Cu421 complex significantly inhibited the EPSPs activity, as did the commercial product. In vivo test showed that treatments increased PAL activity more than double. The Cu421 complexed caused a substantial decline in the Falker chlorophyll index, as well as, the greatest reduction in the fresh mass yield and total protein concentration. In addition, the Cu 421 complexed application resulted in an increase in N-NO3- content in B. decumbens. The Cu421 complex had similar action as Roundup WG® and the purified glyphosate, indicating the possibility of using this complex to control weeds.

Lanthanide-doped sodium yttrium tetrafluoride nanoparticles show intense upconversion emissions which raise great attention in a variety of luminescence applications. This host lattice shows specially attractive properties in its hexagonal phase, which normally requires high temperature reactions and complex procedures to be synthesized. In this work, we synthesized nano-and micro-sized NaYF4 particles with controllable cubic or hexagonal structure via sacrificial colloidal template method under mild conditions of 50 ºC/1 atm in a 3 h-long reaction.

The partial dissolution of orthophosphate ions into yttrium orthovanadate lattices led to an enhancement of the luminescence of orthovanadate groups. The combination of the luminescence of vanadate ions with emissions of lanthanide ions can be used to develop self-calibrating optical thermometers with two emitting centers in the same lattice. In this sense, europium(III)-doped yttrium orthovanadate particles containing different amounts of phosphate ions (x=0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.20, 0.30, 0.40 and 1) were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis. The XRD patterns confirmed the formation of solid solutions with tetragonal zircon-type structure. The luminescence analysis showed that composition with 20% of phosphate ions show comparably intense emissions from vanadate groups and europium(III) ions, which is potentially applicable inn ratiometric temperature measurements via two-center downshift luminescence. Additional studies using trivalent thulium and erbium as activators can extend de applicability of the material by enabling dual downshift/upconversion thermometry.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
