Brazil may have the highest absolute number of individuals infected by human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1). It has been suggested that the prevalence of HTLV-1 is increased in patients with skin diseases. This study shows a higher prevalence of this infection in 1,229 patients attending a Brazilian dermatology clinic (0.7%) when compared to blood donors (0.22%). Of note, one additional patient tested positive for HTLV-2. The main skin diseases described in HTLV-1 seropositives were vitiligo (2 cases), dermatophytosis (2 cases), and leprosy (2 cases). A 23-year-old woman received a diagnosis of infectious dermatitis.
The low rates of women's political participation are attributable not only to women's underrepresentation in formal political positions, but are equally a consequence of women's position in Lebanon as "second class citizens." This definition of "women's empowerment" is individualistic, and does not pay attention to the ways that women are actually embedded in various systems of oppression.
The Gender-Sensitive Risks and Options Assessment for Decision Making (ROAD) to Support WiF-2 (ROAD migration project), a partnership coordinated by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Australian National University, American University Beirut, Lincoln University, and University of Dhaka, evaluated the ILO-DFID Partnership Programme on Fair Recruitment and Decent Work for Women Migrant Workers in South Asia and the Middle East (Work in Freedom, Phase 2 project [WiF-2]), which operated from 2018 to 2023. The WiF-2 project specifically aimed “to reduce vulnerability to trafficking and forced labour of women and girls across migration pathways leading to the care sector and textiles, clothing, leather and footwear industries (TCLFI) of South Asia and Arab States” (ToC WiF-2).
