Eschweilera truncata trees, known commercially by the name of Matamatá, are abundant, widely distributed throughout the forest, and characterized by important features for forest management, but are not harvested due to the scarcity of studies of the technological attributes that would reveal their potential, such as their machining and physical properties. Otherwise such studies might contribute to the inclusion of new species in the market, strengthening the sustainability of the forest ecosystems. Given this gap, the present research aimed to evaluate the performance of Matamatá wood in terms of its physical properties and behaviour under the machining process that would be used in this sector of the timber industry. The research involved a study of the tree, from which a base disk was removed in order to analyse its apparent density, density, shrinkage and anisotropy coefficient. The tradable shaft was split into logs and planks to assess the effects of machining processes. In the data analysis, we used descriptive statistics and the Tukey test. The results obtained classify Matamatá wood as high density and identify its anisotropy coefficient of 1.90, suggesting a medium to low stability. E. truncata wood performed excellently in the machining evaluation, and its results in the planer, sandpaper, drill perforation, frame in the top and lathe tests were also outstanding; in addition it presented wood material of the same quality throughout, whether heartwood or sapwood. This is an important indicator of wood yield, signifying that greater use can be made of the wood. The performance of the wood was validated via the manufacture of products such as furniture, decoration and finger-boards for musical instruments. In general, it can be concluded that the wood studied may be used in the lumber industry, because it presents similar features to those in the species already marketed and because it is plentiful all over the Amazon region.
ResumoA utilização de resíduos madeireiros é muito incentivada por instituições de pesquisa, órgãos e universidades. Um dos principais polos florestais do Brasil está concentrado na região norte de onde todo esse potencial provém de florestas nativas, apesar do incentivo, ainda existem muitas objeções quanto ao beneficiamento da madeira por questões burocráticas, ambientais e logísticas no campo da exploração madeireira. A pesquisa em questão visou classificar resíduos provenientes de processamento mecânico de madeiras certificadas e resíduos florestais para produção de produtos com valor agregado e sustentabilidade. Para seu desenvolvimento foi realizado levantamento dos dois tipos de resíduos disponíveis nas serrarias e em áreas de floresta, registrando suas características como comprimento e largura, cor da madeira, se estavam atacadas por fungos ou coleópteros. Os produtos confeccionados mostraram a potencialidade do uso dos dois tipos de resíduos na confecção de moveis sem perder as características das madeiras de forma sustentável.Palavras Chave: Resíduos Madeireiros; Sustentabilidade; Ecodesign. AbstractOne of the main forest poles in Brazil is concentrated in the northern region where all this potential comes from native forests, despite the incentive, there are still many objections regarding wood processing due to bureaucratic, environmental and logistic issues in the field of logging. The research in question aimed to classify residues from mechanical processing of certified timber and forest residues for the production of products with added value and sustainability. For its development, a survey of the two types of residues available in sawmills and in forest areas was carried out, recording their characteristics as length and width, color of the wood, if they were attacked by fungi or beetles. The products made showed the potential of the use of both types of waste in the manufacture of furniture without losing the characteristics of the wood in a sustainable way.
Este artigo tem o objetivo de apresentar as práticas sustentáveis e não sustentáveis da produção de sandálias rasteiras de couro caprino na Cooperativa Arteza em Cabaceiras/PB identificadas pela Avaliação do Ciclo de Vida do Produto. Para compreender as etapas de fabricação foi realizada visita “in loco” no ambiente produtivo. A partir de uma avaliação visual foram identificadas práticas que buscam minimizar os impactos ao meio ambiente e outras que necessitam de estudos e intervenção.
A Associação de Idosos do Coroado (ASSIC) em parceria com o Programa Coroado/UFAM, Manaus (Amazonas), têm desenvolvido estudos para adequação de sua sede, entre eles a pesquisa para geração de alternativas de mobiliário a partir do reuso de pallets e de diretrizes do Design Social, apresentadas neste artigo. Essas alternativas mostraram-se ser de fácil fabricação e uma alternativa de geração de renda para marceneiros locais pelo baixo custo de execução, pelo valor agregado aos produtos finais e pela aceitação dos usuários.
In the midst of the current logging scenario and the growing concerns and actions in favor of preserving the environment, research related to the insertion of new tree species in the market and about the design of products with low environmental impact are of paramount importance for the development of forest management and product design activities. Thus, The holistic view, which includes everything from the extraction of the raw material to the final disposal of the product, guided this research in order to show the technological potential of the species Micrandopsis scleroxylon W. Rodr. through machining and validation processes by making an eco-efficient product. The methodology adopted was: survey of the demand, designing of the concept, definition of the function, generation and materialization of alternatives, tests and refinements and presentation of the final solution. The results obtained in the process of machining the wooden material of the species were excellent throughout the process. It is believed that the approach inherent to small diameter trees, for the benefit of forest management, provides the understanding that it is possible to make use of them in the manufacture of the most varied wooden artifacts.
