Brazil’s dependence on road transportation, combined with the high extent of the network and the lack of investment management in maintenance and restoration, makes traffic conditions poor, resulting in unwanted costs and environmental impacts. Life cycle assessments are a promising tool that assists in decision making. This study aimed to evaluate the environmental performance of three roads, applying different restoration and maintenance techniques throughout the analysis cycle. To develop this study, the ecoinvent database and the OpenLCA software were used to model, based on studies developed in the HDM-4 (Highway Development and Management) software, and the interventions were applied for the initial year and for 30 years. Using the life cycle assessment methodology, the environmental impacts generated for the categories of acidification, climate change, eutrophication, ecotoxicity, human toxicity and photochemical oxidation were identified. The results show that, when analyzing the restorations in their implementation, deep recycling generates more environmental impacts; however, when planning the restorations throughout the cycle, deep recycling becomes, on average, 47% less impactful than the structural reinforcement technique, which is the same behavior that has been identified with the Whitetopping technique. It becomes evident that the use of rigid structures, such as Whitetopping or semi-rigid structures and deep recycling with Portland cement additions, generate fewer environmental impacts when compared to flexible structures that consume a large amount of asphalt binder, and that require interventions at shorter intervals.
Soilwaste has become an economically viable and sustainable solution in geotechnical engineering, whereas many industrial tailings, when associated with other materials are able to satisfy the properties required in projects. This study aimed to form incorporated soil mixtures with two types of waste aiming to use them in landfill liners. Six soil-waste mixtures were developed, where the waste quantity and the compaction energy were varied. They were normal (NOR) and modified (MOD). The formulated mixtures were: 0R-NOR, 10LM-NOR, 10AG-NOR, 0R-MOD, 10LM-MOD and 10AG-MOD, where 10LM means an addition of 10% lime-mud and 10AG means an addition of 10% agricultural-gypsum, both in relation to dry soil mass. The mixtures were subjected to the variable load permeability test to verify them in terms of the required liner parameters. It is worth mentioning that both compaction energy and waste addition were able to reduce soil permeability, however, the percentage of material added to the mixture was not sufficient to reach values lower than E-07 cm/s.
Abstract:Traffic-related problems in the municipalities of Joaçaba, Luzerna and Herval d'Oeste in the state of Santa Catarina, aggravate daily, leading to queuing and congestion. In this way the identification, quantification and qualification of the vehicles and flows is essential for the development and progress of the Santa Catarina Midwest. To obtain the data, traffic studies were carried out at four intersections in the center of the city of Joaçaba, located at critical points. In these points, an average of 33,000 vehicles per day, representing 145% of the Joaçabense fleet, or 80% of the population arrangement (Joaçaba, Luzerna and Herval d'Oeste) circulate on average. With the data from the study it was possible to attest to the disregard for the type of mass transportation in the region, of which cars and motorcycles represent on average 95% of the traffic, causing congestion and reducing the average speed at peak times. The volume counting of vehicles brings diverse information of the traffic of Joaçaba, being able to be basis for the engineering planning of the population arrangement.
