An improved method of derotating upper molars is described which utilizes a modified palatal arch. Its principal advantages are threefold: No wires are visible from the front of the mouth; the great flexibility of the arch minimizes the adjustments (and thus patient visits) necessary to maintain an ideal rotating force; and torque may be applied to the molars if required. Clinical experience has shown the arch to be well tolerated and very robust.
A technique of transplanting canines using orthodontic bracket fixation is described. The extracted tooth has its root suspended in the patient's own blood whilst the dried isolated crown is freely accessible for the direct bonding of an edgewise bracket at a predetermined position. A special bottle with rubber and clamp in the lid is needed for this procedure and is described. Advantages of the technique include the following: Ideal positioning of the canine under direct vision; the possibility of forming a canine eminence and the easy assessment at intervals, of the firmness of the transplant. Therefore, the fixation may be removed, in many cases, before the usual 6 week period.
