West Kalimantan is inhabited by multi-ethnicity communities, such as Dayak, Melayu, and Java. Dayak community is the major ethnic and spread out in West Kalimantan province. At present, Dayak community has many restricted accesses for specifically agricultural information and technology innovation. The objective of this article is to identify the role of Dayak community chief and their communication strategy for agricultural development. The method used in this article was literature review about Dayak culture and their development communication. Dayak community was initially dwelling in Kalimantan region with main occupation as dry land farmers. Strategies to improve accessibility of Dayak community on information and technology innovation are suggested as follows: (a) empowering the role of community chief as liaison person (contact person), (b) revitalizing mass media using radio and television with Dayak culture attributes, and (c) establishing small group communication by participatory communication within and outside the community. ABSTRAKPenduduk Kalimantan Barat terdiri dari berbagai komunitas masyarakat (multi-etnis), dimana tiga etnis terbesar adalah etnis Dayak, Melayu dan Jawa. Komunitas Dayak memiliki populasi yang terbesar dibanding yang lain dan hidup menyebar di wilayah Kalimantan Barat. Komunitas Dayak merupakan suku asli Kalimantan dan memiliki budaya bertani sebagai petani ladang. Tujuan dari penulisan ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi dan merumuskan strategi komunikasi pembangunan pertanian pada komunitas Dayak di Kalimantan Barat yang lebih sesuai, dengan memanfaatkan eksistensi tokoh-tokoh adat. Tulisan ini merupakan review literatur berbagai bahan tertulis berkenaan dengan aspek adat, peran tokoh adat Dayak, dan komunikasi pembangunan pertanian. Strategi pendekatan komunikasi yang sebaiknya dilakukan dalam kaitan tersebut adalah melalui pemberdayaan tokoh adat Dayak sebagai liaison person atau penghubung, revitalisasi komunikasi massa melalui pemanfaatan media radio dan televisi dengan atribut adat Dayak, serta pendekatan komunikasi kelompok melalui komunikasi partisipatif di dalam dan luar komunitas Dayak. Agricultural development actors in Indonesia are currently dominated by elderly farmers and a small proportion of young farmers. Another condition is that the farming system in Indonesia is generally subsistence. Several good potentials in the context of agricultural development in Indonesia today, firstly, the productive working age group is dominated by youth, especially the millennial generation, and secondly, the growing rapidly used internet networks. The condition of subsistence farming and the lack of young actors in agriculture, but on the other hand there is the potential of the millennial generation and availability of internet networks access. This study employed a quantitative research method. The purpose of this research is to see the current condition of agricultural development in Indonesia concerning its current potential. Another objective is to design the appropriate strategy for exploiting this potential to accelerate agricultural development in Indonesia. The results obtained from this research are the high level of accessibility of rural communities as initial capital for agricultural development in Indonesia for now. The millennial generation who dominates the working age in Indonesia can maximize their role in the agricultural sector in rural areas through developing entrepreneurship based on the use of internet networks.
Studies on border areas have given much attention on their strategic position in term national security sectors. This security-oriented analaysis overlook economic potential of border areas that are essential in the development of border areas and marginal society. The rich economic potential of border areas evident in the outer areas of Wes Kalimantan, including five regencies which are directly adjacent to the Sarawak state of Malaysia. Three out of five districts have the official cross-border. These areas have extensive potential land as a source of forage and livestock feed; however the effort to increase animal husbandry and meat production are still met with challenges. The purpose of this study is to analyze the condition of food security of the people at the border, especially in animal protein sufficiency and to make a proper strategy in improving of livestock sector in order of food security at the border areas of West Kalimantan. This study is based quantitative analysis of farming statistic in West Kalimantan. Using Dependency Theory this study found that while people at border are in West Kalimantan are relatively safe from food scarcity, their productivity is lower than the potential in livestock population and meat production. Two factors are essential, namely 1) optimization of superior forage planting on cultivated land and grazing land, and 2) maximum utilization of rubber and palm oil plantation application of integrated crops and livestock system and its modification
The access to information on the selling price of tomatoes by tomato growers is perceived very limitedin the pastin Pangalengan District. The appearance of information technology, such as mobile phone,provides opportunities for tomatoes growers to obtain the access to more information, wider, fasterand cheaper. The general objective of this research is to identify the behavior of tomato growers’communication and the influence aspects of the use of mobile phones toward the effectiveness ofcommunication in Pangalengan District. The method for this research is explanatory survey research.Two-steps random sampling has been used in this research with selected sample of 165 respondents.The research unit is focused on the tomatoes growers who used mobile phones. The result indicates thatthe tomato growers in Pangalengan District perceive the use of mobile phones provides benefits to havemore options for the selling price of tomatoes. The result of statistical analysis shows that the use ofmobile phones among tomato growers and tomato sellers has given significant effect on the effectivenessof communication and increasing the intensity of tomato sales.From this research, it is recommendedto provide the information management of the selling price of tomatoes via mobile phones involvingAgriculture Information Officer (PIP) which already exist today.
Disruption is a major change or critical point that occurs in the world today, which covers almost all aspects of life. It is characterized by the use of information technology. Indonesia is an agricultural country, in which around 25.89% of the population of the labour force works in agriculture in 2019. Generally, the agricultural system in Indonesia is still conventional and not connected and integrated yet with information technology. The research aims to identify the conditions of ownership and the level of accessibility of farmers to agricultural information technology. Another aim is to get a strategy for empowering farmers to improve accessibility to information technology. This study used a literature research method and a quantitative approach This research was carried out by a descriptive statistic. The results show that 62.41% of Indonesian population had used cell phones, but only 16.15% of the population worked in agriculture. Some farmers empowerment strategies were carried out with three approaches, namely through by optimizing the role of millennial youth farmers and increasing the ratio of smartphone ownership by the farmer through credit schemes. Finally, increasing applications in the smartphone for agriculture item.
