Laser-induced self-organization of regular nanoscale layered patterns in fused silica is investigated using spectroscopy and microscopy methods, revealing a high presence of stable broken oxygen bonds. Longitudinal traces are then generated by replicating static irradiation structures where the nanoscale modulation can cover partially or completely the photoinscribed traces. The resulting birefringence, the observed anisotropic light scattering properties, and the capacity to write and erase modulated patterns can be used in designing bulk polarization sensitive devices. Various laser-induced structures with optical properties combining guiding, scattering, and polarization sensitivity are reported. The attached polarization functions were evaluated as a function of the fill factor of the nanostructured domains. The polarization sensitivity allows particular light propagation and confinement properties in three dimensional structures.
We investigate interactions between in-phase or out-of-phase Airy beams and nonlinear accelerating beams in photorefractive crystals by means of direct numerical simulations. Since self-accelerating beams possess infinite energy, we evaluated the propagation of two shifted counter beams by truncating the oscillating tails. The numerical results show that the external bias electric field has a profound effect on the propagation dynamics and the solitons shed from the Airy beam. We also found that during interactions between two nonlinear accelerating beams, single solitons, soliton pairs, and bound breathing solitons were produced. When the nonlinear accelerating beam collides with a soliton beam, the main lobe continues accelerating while the soliton intensity fluctuates with the lobes.
Abstract-A waveguide with a circular transverse profile can be obtained by using a slit beam shaping method. Applications about optical circuit chips in glass require a circular cross section waveguide in two dimensions. Here we reported to realize a fabrication of circular cross section waveguide in two dimensions by rotating the slit corresponding to the tangent line of the arc of the waveguide. The dependence of cross section on width of the slit was investigated in experiment. The difference of slit width between geometrical optics pre diction and experimental result was explained by considering the focal shift in xy directions due to diffraction effects.
