S. B. LAL 169 temporary standard. Such averages have been reported by RAO, TASKAR and RAMA-NATHAN (1954) for the children of Coonoor (a hill station in South India) and by AYKROYD and RAJAGOPAL (1936) for children of Coonoor, Metupalayam and Calicut. The children of this State were lighter and shorter than those of Coonoor, better than that of Metupalayam and Calicut, but much inferior to American children (HOLT, 1940). SUMMARY Nutritional defects and grading observed in 54,869 children (41,593 boys and 13,276 girls) in Bihar have been reported. The percentage of defects probably due to deficiency of vitamins A and B-complex was high and the intake of foods containing these was also low. The average heights and weights of 51,026 children between ages 2 to 15 years belonging to the same race have been collected. They were better than figures reported for South Indian children but worse than children from hill districts and especially compared with North American standards.
