Repositories / Microorganisms / Radionuclide migration / Interim storage / Microbial activity SummaryDuring construction and operation of repositories for radioactive wastes microorganisms will get into the disposal area. Furthermore, it is possible that microorganisms or their inactive forms occur in the sediment/groundwater systems of the geosphere. The effects of possible microbial processes on the safety of repositories have been checked. The conclusion for the planned German repositories is that microbial impacts can be neglected in comparison with those physical and chemical processes which determine the release and the transport of radionuclides.
