To study the effect of salicylic acid on photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, b, total chlorophyll, and carotenoids), polyphenol compounds, anthocyanin, flavonoids, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity, malondialdehyde, lipoxygenase activity, electrolyte leakage, relative water content, soluble sugar contents, and protein content of black cumin (Nigella sativa) under drought stress in hydroponic culture, an experiment was conducted as a completely randomised design in a factorial arrangement with three replicates. Experimental treatments included salicylic acid at three levels (0, 5, and 10µM) and drought stress (induced by polyethylene glycol 6000) at four levels (0, –0.2, –0.4, and –0.6 MPa). Results showed that salicylic acid application through the root medium increased drought tolerance of black cumin seedlings. Plants pre-treated with salicylic acid exhibited slight injury symptoms whereas those not pre-treated with salicylic acid had moderate damage and lost considerable portions of their foliage. In conclusion, salicylic acid could protect the Nigella plant against drought stress through increasing of all the mentioned traits, and 10µM salicylic acid was the most effective level under both conditions.
Henna (Lawsonia inermis L.) is naturally cultivated from north-east Africa to India as a medicinalindustrial plant. The objective of this study was to evaluate the possible role of salicylic acid (SA) for mitigating the salinity stress. For this purpose, we evaluated the effect of three concentrations of SA (0, 40 and 80 μM) and salinity (0, −3 and −6 bar) on photosynthetic pigments, protein content, catalase (CAT, EC 1.11.1.6) activity, electrolyte leakage and leaf relative water content (RWC). The experiment was carried out with a factorial arrangement based on complete randomized design in triplicates at University of Kerman, Iran. The results revealed that salinity caused a significant decrease in photosynthetic pigments, protein content, RWC and quantum yield of henna. By increase in salinity levels from 0 to −6 bar, the mean values of mentioned traits were reduced. CAT activity, electrolyte leakage, F 0 and F m were elevated significantly with increasing the salinity concentration. Application of SA under salinity stress increased the photosynthetic pigments, protein content, CAT activity, leaf RWCs and quantum yield, while it decreased electrolyte leakage, F 0 and F m . It can be concluded that SA alleviated the stress generated by NaCl possibly through the ameliorated antioxidant defense system.
This study was carried out to investigate the biomedicinal potential of aqueous extract (1.25 and 2.5%) of three henna ecotypes (Shahdad, Roodbar and Bam) against Two types of Gram positive and negative bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Streptococcus agalactiae (ATCC 29933), Bacillus cereus (ATCC 14579), Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis (ATCC 19410), Klebsiella pneumonia (ATCC 700603), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) and Salmonella enterica serovar typhi (ATCC 19430). Henna extract prevent the growth of bacteria in a dose dependent manner. The species of K. pneumonia and B. cereus showed higher resistant to henna aqueous extract compared with other bacteria species. Leaves aqueous extract of Shahdad ecotype had the highest antioxidant activity compared with those of the other ecotypes. The highest amount of 2hydroxy-1, 4-naphthoquinone as an antibacterial compound was obtained in Bam ecotype. The
Cefuroxime is a second generation cephalosporin antibiotic with a broad spectrum activity against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. The purpose of this research work was to evaluate the pharmaceutical quality standards of four different brands of cefuroxime axetil 125 mg tablets with different price ranges purchased from retail pharmacies of Pakistan. The brands were tested for physicochemical evaluation and in vitro dissolution studies in different medium like 0.07N HCl, distilled water, 0.1N HCl of pH 1.2 and phosphate buffers of pH 4.5 and pH 6.8. Statistical analysis, model dependent (zero order, first order, Korsmeyer-Peppas, Hixson-Crowell, Weibull) and model independent (Difference f1, similarity f2) approaches were applied to multiple dissolution profile of all brands. All brands were found to be similar with reference and meeting the compendial quality standard. Inter brand variation was observed in disintegration time and assay which was resulted in significant differences (P<0.05) in drug release data and Weibull was observed as best fill model.
