The Indonesian curriculum year 2013 requires students to have Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) that match the competence needs in 21st century. Based on international assessment, Indonesia’s student rank is insufficient because the student is not familiar with solving problems requiring reasoning and analysis, including topic of algebra. This research aims to produce HOTS questions about algebra at Junior High School, which is valid, practical, and effective. This research is development research which consists of two stages, namely preliminary and formative evaluation. The participants in this study were grade 7 and 8 students in one Junior High School at Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The instruments were validation sheets, student response questionnaires, practicality test questionnaires, and HOTS questions. The result shows that the HOTS algebraic questions were meet the criteria: valid because all validators stated that the HOTS questions are suitable to use and the average value of the validation was reach very valid criteria; practical because all validators suggested that the learning tools can be applied in the class; effective because students’ response toward problems was positive dan the ability of students to solve questions is diverse. Thus, these HOTS questions can be used at the junior high school level.

This study us quantitative approach with the type of experimental research and the research design us pretest and posttest design type experiments. The sample was chosen randomly from two classes of 7th grade in one of public junior high school in Sigli, Aceh. The research instrument used was mathematical communication ability test and mathematical disposition questionnaire. The data analysis of students' communication and disposition ability was done by two-way ANAVA test at a significant level of 0.05. The results showed that the improvement of students' mathematical communication and disposition skills taught with discovery learning models was better than those taught with conventional approaches. Furthermore, there was no interaction between discovery learning model and the level of students towards improving communication skills and mathematical dispositions. Therefore, the mathematics teachers can implement discovery learning models in learning to build the next polyhedron. Future researchers should conduct research at other schools in order to improve students' mathematical communication skills in mathematics learning

Mathematical achievement in problem solving is not yet as expected. This is due to strategies that have not accommodated the situation of students. Adversity quontient is the state of the student who needs to get the attention of the teacher so that the learning strategy is expected to be appropriate. This research aims to describe the thinking process of MTs Darul Hikmah students in solving mathematical problems in build side spaces of material reviewed from adversity quotient. This research is in the form of qualitative. The subject selection was done by giving questionnaires to class VIII MTsS Darul Hikmah students and obtained by each one person from each adversity quotient group. The subjects in this study amounted to two students. Data collection is done through tests and interviews, while data analysis uses qualitative data analysis techniques, namely data reduction, data display and conclusions from each adversity quotient group. The results showed that no class VIII students entered the quitters group and the results of the study also showed that class VIII students consisted of climpers and campers. The process of thinking of MTsS Darul Hikmah students based on adversity quotient varied: students in the climbers category namely 3 of 53 students had conceptual thinking processes, while students in the campers category were 27 of 53 students did not have conceptual, semiceptual, or computational thinking processes.
Mathematical communication skills of students are still relatively low. One learning model can improve students 'mathematical communication skills and at the same time students' mathematical disposition is the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model. The aim to be achieved is to find out the improvement of students 'mathematical communication skills and mathematical disposition using PBL models in terms of students' initial mathematical level. This research is an experimental research design with pretest posttest control group design. The research population was Grade VII students of SMP 9 Langsa. Students are grouped into two classes namely the experimental class and the control class randomly selected from eight parallel classes. The instrument used was a test of mathematical communication skills and a mathematical disposition questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using two-way ANOVA. The results showed that improving students 'mathematical communication ability and students' mathematical disposition by applying PBL learning models is better than students applying conventional learning models. There is no interaction between the PBL learning model with student level on mathematical communication skills and students' mathematical disposition. Abstrak Kemampuan komunikasi matematis siswa masih tergolong rendah. Salah satu model pembelajaran dapat meningkatkan kemampuan komunikasi matematis siswa dan sekaligus disposisi matematis siswa adalah model Problem Based Learning (PBL). Tujuan yang ingin dicapai ialah untuk mengetahui peningkatan kemampuan komunikasi matematis siswa dan disposisi matematis menggunakan model PBL ditinjau dari kemampuan awal matematis siswa. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimen dengan desain pretest postest control group design. Populasi penelitian adalah siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 9 Langsa. Siswa dikelompokkan menjadi dua kelas yaitu kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol yang dipilih secara acak dari delapan kelas paralel. Instrumen yang digunakan tes kemampuan komunikasi matematis dan angket disposisi matematis. Analisis data dilakukan dengan menggunakan anova dua arah. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa peningkatan kemampuan komunikasi matematis siswa dan disposisi matematis siswa dengan menerapkan model pembelajaran PBL lebih baik dari pada siswa yang menerapkan model pembelajaran konvensional. Tidak terdapat interaksi antara model pembelajaran PBL dengan level siswa terhadap kemampuan komunikasi matematis dan disposisi matematis siswa.
