The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of three types of natural medicinal plants oils on the transverse strength, residual monomer and hardness of polymethylmethacrylate. Materials and methods: Total number of samples of (105) have been prepared in this study. Fifteen samples of heat cured ProBase acrylic resin were prepared without additives (Control), and (90) samples were prepared with additives (Ginger oil ,Meramia and Eucalyptus oil) in two concentrations (1.5 and 2.5) to evaluate transverse strength, indentation hardness and residual monomer. Results: The results showed a significant difference between control and addition groups in the transverse strength and hardness tests. The addition of oils decreased the transverse strength ,and increased the hardness.There was no significant difference between the residual monomer for control and addition groups, but the control group at the first day showed higher residual monomer release. Conclusion: The addition of eucalyptus , meramia and ginger oils to acrylic resin decreased the transverse strength , increased its hardness and showed no significant difference in residual monomer.
Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate radiographically the effect of nano-hybrid composite resin teeth on mandibular residual ridge using cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT). A comparative study. Materials and Methods: Twelve completely edentulous male patients were randomly divided into two groups according to the artificial tooth material used in complete denture construction. One group received complete dentures with nano-hybrid composite resin teeth and the other group received complete dentures with cross-linked acrylic resin teeth. CBCT was taken at the delivery, 6 months and 12 months follow-up appointments. The evaluation was done for height and width changes of the mandibular residual alveolar ridge at different anatomical sites either in the anterior or posterior part of the mandible. Results: Analysis was done by using two-tailed t-test revealed that increase in amount of bone loss in both groups which is in favor to patients wearing dentures with nanohybrid composite resin teeth, with no statistically significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: Despite of introduction of new denture tooth material as nanohybrid composite resin teeth, the cross-linked acrylic resin teeth still considered the gold standard denture teeth regarding the degree of occlusal force transmission and preservation of residual alveolar ridge.
Aims: To evaluate the effect of surface coating with natural plant oils (Salvia officinalis, ginger and eucalyptus) on Candida growth and the hardness of Vertex denture lining material. Materials and method: Forty five specimens were prepared from soft acrylic lining material, twenty five of which were 10x10x2mm in size for testing antifungal activity, and twenty samples were 20mm in diameter and 12mm in thickness, for testing shore A hardness after coating samples with three types of natural oils (Salvia officinalis, ginger and eucalyptus oils). Significant differences among the groups at (p≤0.05) level of significance were determined statistically with one way analysis of variance and Duncan's multiple range test Result: Antifungal assay showed a significant difference between five groups regarding Candida albicans growth (p≤ 0.05). For the hardness test, comparing different times of storage in water (1, 7, 14, 30 days) revealed a significant difference within all groups (p≤0. 05). While comparing the groups coated with natural oils with the control group, significant differences were found between different times of storage in water (1, 7, 30 day) (p≤0.05), except at 14 days of water storage there was no significant difference between groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: All tested natural oils were effective as fungicidal agents and increased the softness and duration of soft acrylic lining material.
